NFL-National Football League roundup

July 16 (The Sports Xchange) - New York Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, who agreed to a long-term contract prior to Friday's deadline for franchise players, is likely to start training camp on the physically unable to perform list. ESPN's Rich Cimini reported that Wilkerson, who broke his right leg in Week 17 last season, is still rehabbing and the team wants to be cautious in the early stages of camp. Wilkerson made his first Pro Bowl last season after leading the Jets with 12 sacks, a career high. He broke his fibula in the final game, requiring surgery and a six-month rehab. Sources told ESPN that Wilkerson's five-year deal is worth $86 million, with $36.75 million guaranteed and a $15 million signing bonus. The contract, which averages $17.2 million per season, also includes an injury guarantee of $53.5 million. The 26-year-old Wilkerson received the Jets' non-exclusive franchise tag worth $15,701,000 on March 1. He was allowed to negotiate with other teams but any club that signed him would have had to surrender two first-round picks to the Jets. - - While Von Miller was admittedly "super happy" to become the NFL's highest-paid defensive player and stay with the Denver Broncos, the linebacker's agent sought permission to seek a trade for his client just last week. One day after the Broncos and Miller agreed to a six-year, $114.5 million contract on July 7, agent Joby Branion submitted a counter proposal with greater guaranteed money. Denver general manager John Elway turned down Branion's offer, with the latter requesting permission to find another NFL suitor for the Super Bowl 50 MVP, according to Mike Klis of 9news.com. The report did not divulge which teams - if any - were potential trade partners, or if the request was a ploy to force the Broncos' hand. Regardless, Elway dismissed the trade request and the sides ultimately agreed to the deal with a record $70 million guaranteed on Friday, which came hours before the NFL's franchise tag signing deadline. - - The Oakland Raiders and cornerback David Amerson have agreed to a four-year contract extension, according to reports. Amerson's deal includes $17.5 million in guaranteed money and $38 million in total value, NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported. Amerson, 24, was claimed off waivers from the Washington Redskins early in the 2015 season. The former second-round draft pick had four interceptions - returning one for a touchdown - and 53 tackles in 14 games with the Raiders last season. He has six interceptions and two forced fumbles in his 47-game career. (Editing by Larry Fine) ))
