NHL-National Hockey League roundup

Nov. 28 (The Sports Xchange) - The Florida Panthers sit just two points off the last playoff position in the Eastern Conference, but management decided that isn't good enough, firing coach Gerard Gallant on Sunday night. General manager Tom Rowe will take over as interim coach for the rest of the season, the team confirmed Monday morning. The coaching move came after the Panthers dropped a 3-2 decision to the Hurricanes in Carolina on Sunday night, leaving Florida with a 11-10-1 mark. In addition to Gallant, assistant coach Mike Kelly was fired. Gallant was early in the first year of a two-year contract extension. He posted a 96-65-25 record in two-plus seasons behind the Florida bench. - - The Detroit Red Wings placed defenseman Brendan Smith and left winger Tyler Bertuzzi on the seven-day injured reserve list. Smith and Bertuzzi were injured during the second period of Saturday's 2-1 overtime loss to the Montreal Canadiens at Joe Louis Arena. Smith injured his right knee/leg in a collision with Canadiens forward Phillip Danault, and Bertuzzi hurt his left foot/leg when he fell awkwardly into the boards. - - The Anaheim Ducks recalled defenseman Shea Theodore and center Chris Wagner from the San Diego Gulls of the American Hockey League. Theodore, 21, collected one assist and six penalty minutes in eight appearances with Anaheim this season. Wagner, 25, scored two goals with six penalty minutes in 19 games with Anaheim this season. - - The San Jose Sharks reassigned forward Barclay Goodrow to the San Jose Barracuda of the American Hockey League. Goodrow, 23, played in 14 games for the Sharks last season and recorded three assists. He did not play in any games this year. (Editing by Steve Keating.)
