NHL Three Stars: Johnson stays hot; Nielsen, Green lead Red Wings

No. 1 Star: Chad Johnson, Calgary Flames

Johnson won his third straight decision and fifth game in his last six starts as the Flames edged the Boston Bruins 2-1. Alex Chiasson’s third of the season broke a 1-1 tie midway through the second period. Sam Bennett opened the scoring with his fifth of the year and had the primary helper on Chiasson’s goal.

No. 2 Star: Frans Nielsen, Detroit Red Wings

A back and forth game ended as Mike Green potted his fourth of the year 3:18 into overtime to give the Detroit Red Wings a 5-4 win over the New Jersey Devils. Frans Nielsen had two goals and an assist for his first multi-goal game since Feb. 23.

No. 3 Stars: Charlie Coyle / Nino Niederreiter, Minnesota Wild

The two Wild forwards each scored twice as Minnesota beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-2. Coyle netted his pair in the first period while Niederreiter put home both of his goals on the power play. Devan Dubnyk made 34 saves while Mikael Grandlund and Zach Parise each chipped in two points apiece. Jonas Brodin recorded three helpers.

Honorable Mention: Matt Puempel scored his first goal since joining the New York Rangers and Kevin Hayes added his 10th as they beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 in a Black Friday matinee. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 40 shots as the Flyers lost for the third time in four games … Patrick Marleau broke a 2-2 tie 35 seconds after Nick Leddy evened the score to help the San Jose Sharks get past the New York Islanders 3-2. Aaron Dell made 26 stops for his first win since Oct. 18, also against the Islanders.

Philipp Grubauer, whose family was in attendance to see him in the NHL for the first time, made 32 saves and Brett Connolly scored goal and added an assist as the Washington Capitals got by the Buffalo Sabres 3-1. The Capitals have won four of five games on their homestand … Phil Kessel picked up his 600th career point in the loss … Cam Atkinson, Brandon Saad and Alexander Wennberg each had a goal and an assist as the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-3. The CBJs are now 9-2-2 in their last 13 games … Patrick Kane helped set up Artem Anisimov’s opening goal and later notched his seventh of the season as the Chicago Blackhawks built up a 3-0 lead and held on for a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks. The Blackhawks have now won five straight games in the regular season in Anaheim since March 2013 … Oliver Ekman-Larsson’s shootout goal was the difference as the Arizona Coyotes downed the Edmonton Oilers 3-2. Max Domi and Shane Doan erased a 2-0 Edmonton lead before things went into the shootout. There the Coyotes earned points for the 24th straight game against Edmonton … Cam Talbot made 41 stops in a losing effort … Connor McDavid had himself an eventful night. The Nashville Predators routed the Winnipeg Jets 5-1 with plenty of players piling up points. Johansen scored twice and added an assist; Mike Fisher had three assists; Colin Wilson put home two goals; and Roman Josi had a pair of helpers … Antti Niemi stopped 30 shots and a pair second period goals from Esa Lindell (his first in the NHL) and Radek Faska helped the Dallas Stars down the Vancouver Canucks 2-1. Lindell also had an assist on the eventual game-winner. Dallas won for the first time in 11 games after conceding the first goal of the game. They’re also 11-0-1 in their last 12 against the Canucks.

Dishonorable Mention: Marc-Andre Fleury was in net for all six Minnesota goals as his career record versus the Wild fell to 2-7 with 30 goals allowed, per the AP … Pittsburgh allowed three power play goals on four Minnesota opportunities … Jimmy Howard left the game with a groin injury and will miss about a week, according to head coach Jeff Blashill … Ryan Getzlaf (15 games) and Corey Perry (13 games) could really use a goal … The Sabres have only scored 19 times in their last 13 games … Connor Hellebuyck was in net for all five Nashville goals. He’s now allowed 14 goals in his last four starts … Thomas Greiss will want this one back. Tough deflection from his own D:
