NHL Three Stars: Sens overcome Habs; 14 round shootout madness

No. 1 Star: Mike Hoffman, Ottawa Senators

Hoffman returned to the Ottawa lineup after being out with an injury and had an immediate impact. Each time the Sens dropped down by a goal to the Montreal Canadiens, a goal or an assist came from Hoffman to re-tie the game.

No. 2 Star: Thomas Greiss, New York Islanders

The goaltender made 39 of 41 saves through regulation and OT against the Anaheim Ducks. This included a 7 shot barrage in overtime. In a controversial 14 round shootout, Greiss and the New York Islanders came out on top. Tonight’s game is the first road win for the Isles this season.

No. 3 Star: Alexander Radulov, Montreal Canadiens

Sure his team lost the game, but he would like to submit his nomination for ‘goal of the year.’

Honorable Mention: Who knew it would be the Ottawa Senators that would make Carey Price look human? On the back of three point nights from Hoffman and Mark Stone, the Sens beat the Montreal Canadiens, 4-3. Andre Markov skated away with 3 assists while Alex Galchenyuk and Shea Weber had a goal and an assist each … Cam Fowler and Josh Bailey scored a goal and an assist for their respective teams … Steve Mason made 38 saves in the Philadelphia Flyers 3-1 win over the Florida Panthers. Dale Weiss scored his first goal as a member of the Flyers. While Wayne Simmonds picked up No. 10 on the season … David Backes scored the first goal of the game against his former team the St. Louis Blues. It was also the 20,000 goal in Boston Bruins history. Jori Lehtera netted two in the Blues 4-2 win … Jeff Skinner scored a power play goal and Viktor Stalberg added a shorty to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 2-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Dishonorable Mention: This was Montreal’s first regulation home loss of the season. The Canadiens were 2 of 8 on the power play. The Sens had a 35 straight penalty kill streak snapped by the Habs. Nathan Beaulieu was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons being hit in the throat with the puck … Cal Clutterbuck was pulled out of the game after a hard hit from Josh Manson and did not return. Sami Vatanen did not play after the first period. The Ducks said he was ‘under the weather.’ … The Flyers have lost Sean Couturier to an apparent knee injury. He’ll be sent back to Philadelphia for further evaluations … Zdeno Chara left the game sometime in the second period and did not return … Mitch Marner got messed up at the beginning of the game but was allowed to continue when it was determined his body, not his head, took the brunt to the punishment dealt.
