Nicklas Bendtner offers Matt O'Riley Denmark Euro 2024 snub verdict as Celtic star 'man for future'

Nicklas Bendtner has offered his verdict on Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand's decision to ignore Celtic Player of the Year Matt O'Riley in his Euro 2024 squad.

The coach explained his reasoning for leaving out the Scottish Premiership standout for the tournament in Germany this summer as he revealed it was a "tough choice". But Danish supporters were livid that the 19-goal and 18-assist playmaker was not being brought on the plane with his countrymen.

Hoops fans were also left baffled at O'Riley's omission but former Arsenal and Juventus striker Bendtner - who earned 81 caps and scored 30 times for the Danes - explained how he felt O'Riley is still young and will be a star in the future even if he's not been picked right now.

“If you look at those who have been selected, they are more skilled," he told Stolpe Ind podcast. "It is always a debate, but if we look at it in black and white. Did he have a chance to play in other games? No. Then there is no reason to take him along.

“Although he is extremely talented and might be a man for the future, he is a young lad. He will probably join the national team. I have no doubt about that. But at this point, it’s just not now.”

Asked if O'Riley starring in the Scottish Premiership may have worked against him, Bendtner added: "Yes, it’s small."
