Nightwatchman: Key Ashes moments from day five as Joe Root falls early while England concede second Test

The miracle run chase never happened in Adelaide, having been set up in such tantalising fashion by England by the close of play on day four. Instead we had a procession towards Australia taking a 2-0 lead in the Ashes series, the precision and pace of their bowlers proving too much for England to overcome.

Hazlewood delivers

By the sounds of things all four of Australia's bowlers were chomping at the bit to start off day five. In the end Steve Smith went with Josh Hazlewood whose length was absolutely spot on, dismissing Chris Woakes with just the second ball of the day before most of the spectators had even sat down.

The review was unusual given the lack of activity on hotspot, only for Snicko to reveal the smallest of edges. Just the start England did not want.

Root never gets going

Back for his next over, Hazlewood claimed the prize wicket of the England captain and with it took away England's best chance of adding a big score in their bid to chase down 354.

Root, clearly still getting his touch back having been so good on day four, had no answer to Hazlewood's excellent length early on.

This was another second innings 50 which Root failed to convert into a hundred, his record now reading one in 18 attempts.

Ali falls to Lyon again

Stuck on two and having been diligent throughout the first over from Nathan Lyon, Ali went for the sweep and was promptly out for lbw.

Lyon right now has Ali tucked into his pocket. This was the fourth time so far in this series that 'Garry' has dismissed Ali and turning him into a weak link.

Overton dive

There has been plenty to like about Craig Overton's debut, from his dogged 41 not out in the first innings to claiming the all-important wicket of Steve Smith for his first Test scalp.

Second time round he was forced into more evasive action, taking a hit on the ribs that dropped him to his knees before a full-length dive to avoid a run-out led to him blocking David Warner's throw. He fumed as he walked off, but in hindsight should look back on this as a fine first outing.

Smith's admission

The Australian captain could have easily laughed off any suggestion that he had been concerned by his decision to not enforce the follow-on after England's first innings collapse.
