England head coach Chris Silverwood ruled out the possibility of calling back their star all-rounder Ben Stokes in the ongoing Test series against India.

Silverwood’s decision comes after England lost to India by 151 runs in the second Test at Lord’s on Monday. Although England were in complete control of the match till the early part of Day 5 but they slipped their way out of their hands and were bowled out for 120.

England are struggling with scoring runs with the current batting line-up, apart from skipper Joe Root no other batsman has delivered up to its potential.

Will wait for Ben Stokes to come and tell me he is ready: Chris Silverwood

Despite being in a tricky position with his middle-order batsmen, Silverwood does not plan to recall Stokes, who is currently on an indefinite break from the game to prioritise his mental health.

“No, there is no pushing from my point of view. I don’t think you can push with these issues. I will wait and there will be an element of waiting for him to come to me to let me know he is ready,” said Silverwood told reporters a day after the match.

Ahead of the Test series, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced that all-rounder Stokes has taken an immediate break from all forms of cricket to be with his family and focus on his mental health, which made him rule out of the Test series as well.

The important thing is Ben Stokes and his family are ok: Chris Silverwood

Silverwood wants his player to be in a good condition and unless he himself doesn’t feel like coming back, the head coach won’t push for any move regarding the New Zealand-born player.

“There is no time limit on it. I would stress again the important thing is Ben is okay, his family is okay and that he comes back strong and, when he re-enters the frame, he is ready in his mind to come back and perform for England like we know he can,” Silverwood said.

“I am certainly not pushing him for an answer and I don’t think that would be the right thing to do.

“There are people around him supporting him and, when he is ready to come back in, we will welcome him with open arms, but until then he will get all the support he needs,” Silverwood added.
