Manchester United must beat Chelsea to the signing of Edinson Cavani if they PSG striker is going to leave Paris in January, according to Darren Fletcher.

United and Chelsea are both in need of forwards in the battle for a Premier League top-four finish, and Cavani has handed in a transfer request to PSG following a lack of game time during the first half of the season.

Standard Sport understands that Chelsea are exploring the possibility of signing the Uruguay international, although the 32-year-old is thought to prefer a move to Spain with Atletico Madrid also interested in a potental £15million transfer.

One stumbling block for Atletico could be Cavani's wages - in excess of £360,000-a-week - which could also prove difficult for Chelsea.

United's wage bill is the second-highest in world football behind Barcelona, but the Red Devils could afford Cavani's salary following the departures of Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Ashley Young to Inter Milan over the past two windows.

United are languishing six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in the race for Champions League qualification, and have lost their last two League games without scoring a goal with Marcus Rashford sidelined for the next three months.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already missed out on his top target Erling Braut Haaland after seeing the young striker join Borussia Dortmund, while United are 'miles apart' from Sporting Lisbon regarding a fee for playmaker Bruno Fernandes.

As the pressure mounts on Solskjaer following Wednesday's 2-0 home defeat to Burnley, Ed Woodward and the Glazer family, former Old Trafford midfielder Fletcher says the Red Devils cannot afford to see Frank Lampard's side beat them to Cavani's signature.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Fletcher said of United's need for January reinforcements: "It's a road they didn't want to go down because they've been down that road before, but maybe needs must at this time.

"Probably a striker as well, [they need to sign] Bruno Fernandes and a striker. It's at that case in time.

"If Cavani is available, there's talk of him going to Chelsea… Manchester United can't allow Cavani to go to Chelsea."

Fletcher continued: "I’m not sure [if Chelsea want Cavani], whether it’s Atletico Madrid [he’s moving to], but if he’s going to Chelsea there’s no way Manchester United can let that happen, they’ve got to make sure he comes to Old Trafford.

"If haggling over whatever the Bruno Fernandes deal is, it might mean us paying a little bit more, but they will see that tonight as well, Sporting Lisbon will see the desperation from Manchester United and it puts them in an even more powerful position to hold on to the player and get exactly what they want."
