Noel Gallagher is undoubtedly one of the top two most famous Manchester City fans - the only exception being his brother, Liam. That often places him on a collision course with Liverpool — and he can't even escape it in his own band.

In a wide-ranging interview with The Athletic, Gallagher dissected that modern rivalry, which has seen Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp go toe-to-toe. Interestingly, the former Oasis front man had some kind words for the erstwhile Liverpool boss, conceding that he 'would have destroyed pretty much every team' that came before Manchester City.

But such circumspection is not always the order of the day with Gallagher. And he has needed to put a special rule in place to prevent him coming to blows with certain members of his current band, the High Flying Birds.

"Oh, it’s tense. He’s a Liverpool fan. The drummer, Chris, is a Liverpool fan," Gallagher revealed. "Two of the brass section are Liverpool fans and my guitar tech is a Liverpool fan.

“When the rivalry first started, before the arrival of Guardiola, we watched the games together. And then one night — I think it was the Champions League quarter-final — it got a bit out of hand.

“The Scousers celebrated a little too much and a little too close to my personal space. And I was like, ‘I will ------- fire someone here’. So now we watch the games separately and we’re not allowed to mention it.”

Still one of the major highs of the Klopp era, that quarter-final saw Liverpool rush into a 3-0 lead at Anfield in the first leg against Manchester City. Goals from Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mane put Guardiola's side to the sword.

In the return leg at the Etihad, Liverpool once again triumphed. Manchester City scored early to rekindle some hope, but Klopp's side turned the tide to win 2-1, with Salah and Roberto Firmino finding the net to secure a famous 5-1 aggregate victory.

Liverpool would go on to reach the Champions League final that season, losing to Real Madrid before claiming the trophy the following year. Manchester City finally ended its European drought in 2023.

Liverpool.com says: It sounds like Gallagher's rule might be for the best. He could do without another bitter feud with former bandmates.

And in fairness, even the less incendiary Liverpool and Manchester City fans would have struggled to watch those games together without coming to blows. Credit to Gallagher for at least giving Klopp his dues, in what was a surprisingly balanced take on the recent rivalry.
