The notable players not named in Premier League squads

The 25-man Premier League squads always throw up some interesting picks.

There is Carl Jenkinson in Arsenal’s squad purely because he is a homegrown player. Jenkinson managed a handful of appearances on loan at Birmingham City last year, his last Premier League appearance for the Gunners was in 2016. It is a similar scenario for Lucas Piazon at Chelsea, included because he is a homegrown player, not because Maurizio Sarri thinks he can make the step up.

There are players currently on loan at Football League clubs named in teams’ squads to help reach the homegrown quota, such as Connor Ogilvie, a Spurs youngster on loan at Gillingham. But it is not just the inclusions that make headlines, there are some notable exclusions too. Players, some with plenty of history at this level, who know they will not feature at all in the league until January, at least.

Yahoo Sport takes a look at four players not included in the 25-man squads.

Younes Kaboul

Probably the most experienced player not named in a 25-man squad; after an injury-hit 2017/2018 season at Watford, Kaboul appears surplus to requirements at Watford.

Marco Silva repeatedly name-checked the 32-year-old when he was injured at the start of last season, saying he was a big miss to the side. But he remained sidelined all season and it appears that Javi Gracia has a very different opinion to Silva.

Craig Cathcart and Christian Kabasele have started all four games so far, with Sebastian Prodl, Miguel Britos, Ben Wilmot and Adrian Mariappa all waiting in the wings if they’re injured. So the vastly-experienced Frenchman, who has played nearly 200 times in the Premier League, as well as plenty of games in Ligue 1, will be spending the next six months on the training pitch instead.

Vincent Janssen

You could write a book about strikers who were prolific in Holland failing to make the grade in the Premier League, now Spurs’ Vincent Janssen certainly falls into that category. Much like Alfonso Alves and Ricky Van Wolfswinkel before him, Janssen has never got going after moving – although, having Harry Kane in front of you doesn’t make it easy.

Janssen went on loan to Fenerbahce last year and was expected to head out again this year, but moves failed to materialise. That meant a season at Spurs, and he has not been named in their squad. It was probably a choice between Georges Kevin N’Koudou and Janssen, with the lightning quick winger included instead.

Andy King

Given he spent six months on loan at Swansea City, he it is not necessarily surprising to see Andy King left out of Leicester City’s squad, yet it still feels significant. The Welsh international has made 394 appearances for the Foxes, living through all the bad times, as well as the recent good ones.

But now, was just 29-years-old, he is no longer required. Leicester are a club that want to consolidate their position as a top ten Premier League club, something that King is not likely to be involved in. Another player who would have wanted a loan move, or permanent move, away, King will be limited to cup appearances. A potentially sad ending for a club stalwart.

Lazar Markovic

That Lazar Markovic could have been included in Liverpool’s squad, that there was enough space and Jurgen Klopp still didn’t include him, makes Markovic the most notable exclusion. Klopp does not want Markovic at Anfield, meaning the 24-year-old was not named in the squad and will probably struggle to get a game in the cups too.

It is four years now since Markovic signed for Liverpool for £20m, tipped as hot young prospect. He has featured just 34 times for them since, with loan spells at Hull City and Anderlecht in recent years. A move to the Belgian side fell through on deadline day, meaning the Serbian’s career will continue to stagnate on Merseyside.
