Nottingham Forest 2-0 Tottenham LIVE! Spurs out - Carabao Cup result, match stream and latest updates today
Jesse Lingard finally broke his Nottingham Forest duck as he scored in a 2-0 win that dumped sorry Tottenham out of the Carabao Cup.
Lingard has had an underwhelming start to his Forest career after his surprise free transfer in the summer and had not scored or made an assist in his opening 12 appearances - but he put that right on a memorable night at the City Ground.
The former Manchester United forward headed home from close range in the second half, seven minutes after Renan Lodi curled in to give the Reds a deserved lead on a humiliating night for Spurs.
This competition was a credible chance for Antonio Conte’s men to end their trophy drought but this was a dismal display.
Forest, who had to play the final 14 minutes with 10 men after Orel Mangala had been sent off, may be bottom of the Premier League but they have a rich history in the League Cup, having won it four times, and now at the last-16 stage, they will begin to dream again after a resounding victory.
Tottenham showed their intent by naming a strong team, with no hint of a rest for Harry Kane, who has started every game this season.
Forest made nine changes but started strongly and could have gone ahead inside the opening 10 minutes.
Davinson Sanchez’s attempted clearance crashed into Taiwo Awoniyi and the ball deflected past Fraser Forster into the post, with the Spurs goalkeeper forced to sprawl across goal and keep out Lingard’s header from the rebound.
It was another nondescript start from Spurs, who have been dogged by poor first-half performances recently, and Forest continued to push as Lingard had an effort deflected over and then Forster saved at point-blank range from Joe Worrall.
Spurs managed to get in the game, though never really threatened before the break apart from when Ivan Perisic’s cross found its way to Matt Doherty at the far post and the Irishman’s first-time effort was beaten away by Wayne Hennessey.
Conte’s men, who have now gone eight games without scoring in the first half, would have been hoping for a customary strong showing after the break, but it did not come as Forest started strongly.
Lingard stung the palms of Forster before a deserved breakthrough came in the 50th minute.
Forest won possession back high up the pitch and played the ball out to Lodi, who was allowed to advance on goal and cut inside before curling a delightful finish into the far corner.
The hosts were rampant and only a brilliant stop with his feet by Forster denied Sam Surridge a second.
But there was no stopping Forest as Lingard finally got his first goal for the club in the 57th minute, nodding in from close range after Surridge sent Serge Aurier’s cross back across goal.
Kane was promptly withdrawn in a seemingly pre-planned substitution, which did little to help Spurs’ chances of a comeback.
Forest’s night was marred by Mangala’s stupid red card in the 76th minute as he picked up a second yellow card for scything down Richarlison.
It did not prove costly, though, as Spurs could not mount a recovery, with Richarlison seeing an effort ruled out for offside.

Tottenham player ratings: Kane eyes elsewhere, Spence raises question
21:52 , Jonathan Gorrie
Tottenham slipped out of the Carabao Cup with a miserable 2-0 third-round defeat at Nottingham Forest.
Harry Kane at least avoided injury with England’s World Cup in mind, but this was a forgettable Spurs showing.
Nick Purewal was at the City Ground to rate the Spurs players:
Toothless Tottenham at their worst yet in insipid Forest loss
21:51 , Jonathan Gorrie
If there is one way to stop a trend of having to come back after a slow start, it’s not to bother at all.
For most of Tottenham’s Carabao Cup third-round loss to Nottingham Forest, Antonio Conte’s side were second best, to put it very lightly indeed.
While perhaps that would have been forgiven had the Italian named a hugely rotated lineup - making the nine changes Steve Cooper did - there were few surprises in the starting XI, with only debutant Fraser Forster not a regular Premier League player in his Spurs career.

Replacement Richarlison has the ball in the back of the net courtesy of an almost fluffed header, but the offside flag denies Spurs a goal. The visitors do not deserve one in truth. Off-kilter hardly cuts it for this wretched Tottenham performance

This time Dier will be the one swerving the replays. The centre-back was left stranded at the top of the pitch as Spurs lost possession deep in Forest territory. The hosts broke at pace and Jesse Lingard was left to nod in at the far post. Still, at least one G Southgate can breathe easy again, with Kane subbed off, avoiding incident or injury.

GOAL! Nottingham Forest 2-0 Tottenham | Jesse Lingard ‘58

58:00 - Lingard heads in a flick on after Forest break and the City Ground erupts.
Tottenham face an almighty task now.
Nick Purewal at the City Ground
20:57 , Jonathan Gorrie
Tottenham brought Rodrigo Bentancur into the fray for the second-half, with Hojbjerg making way. That ought to have given Spurs more energy in midfield, but so far the exact opposite has happened. Forster denied Sam Surridge in a one-on-one, and that after Eric Dier was forced into a last-gasp sliding tackle after he and Kane conspired to cede possession all too cheaply.
CHANCE FOR FOREST!
20:56 , Jonathan Gorrie
51:00 - Forster denies Surridge after Lingard’s through ball.
Nick Purewal at the City Ground
20:54 , Jonathan Gorrie
Doherty will not want to see this back again. The full-back stepped out to chase a loose ball but was left flailing at thin air. Renan Lodi stepped through the gap, cut inside and fired home from 18 yards to put Forest 1-0 up.

No score at half-time at Forest, where Yves Bissouma might just spend the interval asking his team-mates to start showing for the ball when he tries to carry out of defence. Kane intact at the break, just in case you’re reading, Gareth.

Hardly a classic, but the home side have had the better chances.
Forest have to make their chances count

36:00 - Spurs, as ever, have so much more to give in this game.
Forest need to start converting their chances from set-pieces, having caused problems all evening.

Harry Kane is definitely playing within himself and how can you blame him? The Spurs skipper has pulled back from several chances to press so far with the visitors more concerned with shape than shift at this point.
CHANCE FOR TOTTENHAM

30:00 - Hennessey makes a brilliant save to deny Doherty.
Spurs’ best move.

Joe Worrall should have put Forest 1-0 up from point-blank range only for Fraser Forster to palm away to safety. The former Southampton stopper tried to style it out like he meant the save but his nonplussed facial expression betrayed his confident body language.

CHANCE FOR FOREST!

Nick Purewal at the City Ground
20:04 , Jonathan Gorrie
It’s a cagey start from Spurs who look exactly what they are – a clutch of players trying to prove a first team point mixed with those definitely thinking about the World Cup.
The visitors will need more movement off the ball to launch any incisive attacks here.
Spurs’ slow start
20:04 , Jonathan Gorrie
17:00 - Once again, Conte’s side are far too reactive. Kane and Perisic do not have a lot to work with.
Lenglet very good so far
20:01 , Jonathan Gorrie
14:00 - The Frenchman is dealing with Lodi very well tonight, drifting wide to stop the Brazilian cutting in.
Lenglet has to clear

CHANCE FOR TOTTENHAM

10:00 - Saying that, Spurs are VERY good at set-pieces.
Perisic’s free-kick finds Dier, though he heads over.
Forest in the ascendancy
19:53 , Jonathan Gorrie
7:00 - Not a shock, but Spurs aren’t exactly making much of a fast start.
Forest haven’t created an awful lot, but certainly are enjoying more of the ball.
CHANCE FOR FOREST

06:00 - Yates sees a 25-yard strike blocked by Lenglet.
Interesting tactical work
19:50 , Jonathan Gorrie
04:00 - Bissouma moving back into defence to allow Lenglet to push forward, with Sanchez all the way up by the Forest box.
Very little for either ‘keeper to do.

Tottenham team news headlines
19:10 , Jonathan Gorrie
Harry Kane started Tottenham’s Carabao Cup match at Nottingham Forest with Antonio Conte and company resisting the urge to rest their talisman and skipper.
The England captain could have been forgiven for craving a rest ahead of the fast-approaching World Cup in Qatar, but any such thoughts were jettisoned as soon as Kane was named in the starting XI.
England boss Gareth Southgate will have everything crossed that Kane comes through tonight’s City Ground encounter safely, ahead of announcing his World Cup squad on Thursday.
Spurs host Leeds of course on Saturday in the Premier League, but this Forest trip was the ideal chance to hand Kane a breather and help out England.
This League Cup third round clash also seemed the ideal chance for Djed Spence to make a start, but the former Forest loanee instead found himself on the bench.

The draw will be conducted by Peter Schmeichel and Dion Dublin, alongside host Mark Chapman.

TV channel: The draw will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football, with Sky Sports News also likely to have coverage.

Souness tells booing Tottenham fans to give Conte time to win trophies
18:36 , Jonathan Gorrie
Graham Souness has told Tottenham fans to be patient with Antonio Conte and they will be rewarded with success.
Spurs again today were booed off at half-time having seen Mohamed Salah scored twice for Liverpool to build up what proved to be an inassignable lead.
Spurs have now lost three in four and defeat to Liverpool saw them drop out of the top four for the first time since August, but Souness says Conte deserves patience from any fan running out of it.
“I think what compounds their problem is there is a team [Arsenal] up the road that’s doing well and they’re being perceived to play a brand of football that’s deemed attractive,” Souness told Sky Sports.

Spurs lose Romero until after World Cup as key duo near returns
18:22 , Jonathan Gorrie
Tottenham defender Cristian Romero is not expected to feature again for the club before the World Cup break as he nurses a muscle problem.
The Argentina international has missed three of the last four matches with a calf strain but is expected to be fit in time for his country’s opening World Cup match against Saudi Arabia on November 22.
Romero sat out Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to Newcastle but played in their subsequent draw with Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League, with head coach Antonio Conte afterwards saying he had taken a “big, big risk” in playing the combative centre-back.
When do England announce 2022 World Cup squad?
18:11 , Jonathan Gorrie
With just under two weeks until the World Cup begins in Qatar, Gareth Southgate and his backroom staff will be making their final decisions on the England squad.
The Three Lions boss will be nervously watching club football over the next few days, hoping that his plans will not be further disrupted by injury problems in the build-up to the tournament which begins on November 20.
Reece James is a major doubt after the Chelsea star picked up a knee injury that is expected to keep him out for eight weeks, while Manchester City duo Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips are both in a race to prove their fitness after undergoing surgery, with Ben Chilwell out.
There are also those on the fringes of the England squad who will be looking to make their case for a place on the plane with a strong run of performances in the coming weeks, with Ivan Toney insisting he is “ready” to perform for the national side.
England face Iran first up in Group B, before matches against the USA and Wales as Southgate’s men look to progress through to the knockout stages in routine fashion.
As was the case at Euro 2020, 26-man squads will be selected for the tournament after FIFA approved the change earlier this year.

Why Tottenham fans should be optimistic despite Liverpool defeat
17:56 , Jonathan Gorrie
Tottenham have spent most of this season grinding out results while not playing well, so there was an irony in Antonio Conte’s side going down to Liverpool after one of their better performances of the campaign.
Spurs were ultimately undone by familiar shortcomings against a big-six rival, and the match was decided by individual errors, notably from Eric Dier, and quality in both boxes, with Mohamed Salah setting the standard, as well as another slow start by the hosts.
Nonetheless, Spurs were not nearly as meek nor brittle as in the defeats by Manchester United and Arsenal last month, and had more than enough chances to take at least a point either side of Harry Kane’s 11th League goal of the season.
Conte appeared almost vindicated by his side’s display, starting his post-match press conference with a dig at Jurgen Klopp, who had criticised Spurs’ counter-attacking football in the 1-1 draw at Anfield in May. “Before I answer the question, Jurgen was happy with the way that we played? Yeah? It was important to know his opinion,” he said.

Tottenham in line for major Richarlison boost after ‘really big improvement’
17:43 , Jonathan Gorrie
Brazil’s national team doctor has backed Richarlison to feature for Tottenham before the World Cup break.
The forward was included in his country’s 26-man squad for the tournament later this month despite a recent injury problem.
A calf issue picked up during Spurs’ win over Everton has ruled the 25-year-old out of action since mid-October, though initial fears Richarlison would miss the World Cup proved to be unfounded.
With only two games to go before club football pauses, the summer signing could offer another boost to Antonio Conte, who welcomed back the influential Dejan Kulusevksi during Sunday’s home loss to Liverpool.
Spurs travel to Nottingham Forest in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before their final Premier League outing, a home meeting with Leeds United on Saturday.
Rodrigo Lasmar, part of Brazil’s medical staff, confirmed they were confident the former Everton and Watford forward would be fully available to manager Tite.
Brazil’s first group game is against Serbia on Thursday November 24.
“Last week we visited Richarlison and [Lucas] Paquetá in London to see the evolution of his injury,” he told Globo Esporte.
“Our assessment is that he had a really big improvement, this week he should train with the group and he has a chance to be used by the club before the presentation.
“We are confident that Richarlison can be fully available to Tite.”
Kane not guaranteed a rest as Spurs coach says World Cup is ‘not our job’
17:34 , Jonathan Gorrie
Tottenham assistant coach Cristian Stellini has refused to rule out Harry Kane starting Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash with Nottingham Forest.
Kane has started every one of Tottenham’s games this season, sitting out just 14 minutes of action.
With the World Cup kicking off next week, it was thought England captain Kane could be rested for Spurs’ trip to Forest in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday.
But Antonio Conte’s No2, Stellini, said: “Antonio will take the decision tomorrow because it is too short a time from the last game to analyse which type of energy the players can use in the next game.
“Antonio will speak with all the players and take the right decision for the team, but it is an important game and an important competition and we want to win.
“We don’t have to think about the World Cup, it is not our job. Our job is to take care of our players and to try to use them to reach our targets but also to save the players.
“We are not crazy, we have to take the right decision with the players sometimes.”
Asked if Kane is the type of player who wants to play every game, Stellini said: “Yes and I want to see Harry Kane in every game.
“But the decision is up to Antonio. But I love football and I love to see talented players and Harry Kane is a talented player and in every competition I hope to see him play for Tottenham.”
Conte ‘happy’ at Tottenham, says assistant, as new contract talks planned
17:32 , Jonathan Gorrie
Antonio Conte can be a project coach at Tottenham, according to his assistant, as he prepares for crunch talks over his future.
Conte’s contract expires at the end of the season and Spurs are planning negotiations to secure him to a longer-term deal during the World Cup.
Tottenham have an option to extend his deal by a further 12 months and are ready to back him with new signings in January.
After Conte warned last month he needs three transfer windows to turn Spurs into title challengers, it had been suggested he might not stick around to oversee a rebuild.
Heung-min Son declares himself fit for World Cup after injury
17:26 , Jonathan Gorrie
Tottenham and South Korea forward Heung-min Son has declared himself fit for the World Cup 2022 after fracturing an eye socket.
The 30-year-old’s participation in the Qatar-based tournament was last week thrown into doubt when Son was forced off during the 2-1 win over Marseille with the injury.
Son, who is South Korea captain, has since undergone surgery on the damaged eye socket, and Spurs manager Antonio Conte was subsequently confident over his player’s chances of playing at the World Cup.
The striker has since confirmed he will be available for selection.
He wrote on Instagram: "Hi everyone. I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you all for the messages of support I have received over the last week. I have read so many of them and truly, truly appreciate you all.
"In a tough time I received a lot of strength from you! Playing for your country at the World Cup is the dream of so many children growing up, just as it was one of mine too. I won’t miss this for the world.
"I can’t wait to represent our beautiful country, see you soon. Sonny."
South Korea’s first Group H game is against Uruguay on November 24.
Prediction: 1-0 Tottenham win

Both clubs can claim their focus is elsewhere so the winner may be which manager puts their star players through the wringer once more amid this busy run of games.
A 1-0 Spurs win.
Tottenham team news: Kulusevski could start
17:18 , Jonathan Gorrie
Spurs could continue Dejan Kulusevski’s comeback from injury by starting the Swedish winger at the City Ground. Richarlison is also potentially set to feature in the squad.
Heung-min Son and Cristian Romero are unavailable so Oliver Skipp, Fraser Forster, Bryan Gil and Pape Matar Sarr will hope for a chance to impress. Amd the changes, Harry Kane could still start up front.
Nottingham Forest team news: Rotation expected
17:17 , Jonathan Gorrie
Omar Richards, Harry Toffolo, Jack Colback, Giulian Biancone and Moussa Niakhate remain on Forest’s long-term absentee list.
While fighting relegation from the Premier League, it will be interesting to see how much Steve Cooper rotates his line-up.
