Nottingham Forest 1-0 Liverpool LIVE! Awoniyi goal - Premier League result and latest updates today

Nottingham Forest vs Liverpool - LIVE!

Nottingham Forest ended their 10-game winless streak in style as Taiwo Awoniyi returned to haunt former club Liverpool and stop their Premier League revival. Awoniyi was on the books at Anfield for six years without ever playing for them, but showed Jurgen Klopp what he was all about, securing a famous 1-0 win that lifts Forest off the bottom of the table after his second-half goal.

Forest beat Liverpool at the City Ground in their first ever Premier League match 30 years ago and this victory will be just as memorable as it is their first three points since August and will provide hope that they can make a fist of their return to the big time after picking up just three points from their last 27 available. This was a thoroughly deserved success born out of aggression, energy and desire that at times Klopp's men could not handle.

The Reds looked to have turned a corner after wins over Manchester City and West Ham in the past week, but after a Wednesday night to Saturday lunchtime turnaround that Klopp hates so much, this was a setback in their attempts to claw themselves back up the table. Nottingham Forest FC 1 - 0 Liverpool FC

Jurgen Klopp told BT Sport: "The performance I can explain, the result not. I never saw a game where one team has four or five no-brainers from a set-piece, but we have to finish it off.

"Bobby (Firmino) first half, Virgil (Van Dijk) two or three times. We have to put the game to bed and their goal is a mistake from us.

"We had to make late changes and it's a game you have to win purely doing the right stuff. Obviously we didn't and that's why we lost the game."

14:33 , Alex Young

Nottingham Forest's winning-goal scorer Awoniyi was on Liverpool's books as a youngster.

He told BT Sport: "For me I think it was a good game for my team. We won and I'm very happy. I was looking forward to the game against Liverpool. It was an emotional game for me."

Midfielder Yates added: "It's what we needed and we thoroughly deserved that today. The manager said before the game that on days like this, 12.30pm kick-off, we need to get the fans behind us and we did.

"We've got to build on this. If we can beat Liverpool we can beat anyone."

A huge, HUGE win for Forest as Liverpool come crashing straight back down to Earth.

The City Ground erupts, Dean Henderson jumps into the crowd.

Full-time!

14:23 , Alex Young

95min: They’ve done it!

14:20 , Alex Young

93min: Van Dijk has a free header just six yards out and Henderson some gets down to make a massive save!

14:17 , Alex Young

91min: Five mins added on.

14:17 , Alex Young

90min: It’s towards Van Dijk at the back post, he again tries to get back across goal but it’s over everyone.

14:16 , Alex Young

89min: Into the final minutes and Liverpool have a free kick on the corner of the area. Trent is standing over it...

14:13 , Alex Young

86min: Huge save! Gibbs-White dinks a smart pass between Gomez and Van Dijk for Yates to drive a shot at goal, but Alisson pulls off an outstanding stop to deny him.

14:12 , Alex Young

85min: Save! Alexander-Arnold flies in at the back post to power a header at goal, which Henderson saves and Salah skies the follow up.

14:07 , Alex Young

81min: Kouyate is replaced with 10 minutes to play. Best player on the pitch today. Mangala is on.

14:04 , Alex Young

78min: Kouyate has been outstanding today and almost sets up another Forest goal, holding off Gomez inside the area to lay the ball to Yates for a snapshot at goal which Alisson saves.

14:03 , Alex Young

77min: Oxlade-Chamberlain on for Firmino.

14:02 , Alex Young

75min: I say Forest are keeping Liverpool at arm’s length, and they are, but they are playing a risky game. Salah is finding himself in space, but still can’t get a sniff.

13:58 , Alex Young

71min: Jones with a pop from the edge of the area after a hopeful cross by Alexander-Arnold. Forest keeping Liverpool at arm’s length so far.

13:56 , Alex Young

68min: Save! Johnson with an almost an instant impact!

Koyate races across the halfway line on the counter, in acres of space before cutting back for the substitute to fire low towards the bottom corner. Fine save from Alisson.

13:50 , Alex Young

64min: Double change for Forest now, as Lingard and Awoniyi make way for Johnson and Worrall.

13:48 , Alex Young

62min: Here they are. Milner and Carvalho make way.

13:48 , Alex Young

60min: Alexander-Arnold and Henderson are being prepped to come on.

13:45 , Alex Young

58min: Oh my word, it should be 2-0!

Forest break and Liverpool are struggling to get numbers back, the ball falls to Gibbs-White who looks certain to score before Milner dives in for a last-gasp block.

GOAL!

13:43 , Alex Young

56min: Here we go! A fierce cross from the right is hit first time by Awoniyi, who hits the post but tucks home the rebound from six yards!

Over to you, Jurgen...

13:41 , Alex Young

54min: Gomez is booked for dragging down Awoniyi around the halfway line. Needed to be done after a sloppy touch.

13:39 , Alex Young

52min: Chance! Salah is unmarked around eight yards out but completely mistimes his shot and fails to make contact with the ball.

Sums him up at the moment.

13:38 , Alex Young

50min: Milner’s deep cross from the right is over Salah, over Firmino and almost catches Carvalho unawares for a tame attempted header at goal.

Second half!

13:35 , Alex Young

47min: First half-chance of the second half falls to Nico Williams, who skips up field against his former team, ignores his team-mates and has a shot from 25 yards which is easily blocked.

Lingard is fuming.

13:31 , Alex Young

Teams are back out. Doesn’t appear to be any changes.

Aurier and Cooper deep in conversation just before the restart.

13:30 , Alex Young

There isn’t much on the bench for Liverpool, which is a worry for Klopp id his team starts the second half slowly or if Salah’s first half injury scare flares up.

It’s basically either Oxlade-Chamberlain or untested teenager Bobby Clark.

13:24 , Alex Young

Little in the way of clear-cut chances, though Van Dijk really should have nodded his team ahead.

I can't imagine either manager will be happy with what they've seen.

Half-time!

13:17 , Alex Young

47min: That’s your lot.

13:16 , Alex Young

45min: One minute added on.

13:14 , Alex Young

42min: Kouyate goes in hard on Elliott, which leaves the youngster seemingly in pain. No booking for the Forest man, which is perhaps quite fortunate.

SITTER!

13:08 , Alex Young

37min: Oh my word, how has Van Dijk missed?!

It’s a free header and he opts to find Firmino five yards out when all he needs is to hit the target!

13:05 , Alex Young

35min: He’s back on, which I didn’t expect.

13:04 , Alex Young

33min: Hmm. This is concerning. Salah goes down in the area under little contact, which is to say he could have injured himself somehow.

He’s getting treatment, but looks in some pain while holding his back and hip.

13:03 , Alex Young

31min: This is more like it! Straight from the following goal kick, Forest break and find Lingard to fire straight at Allison. He should have done better, there.

13:02 , Alex Young

30min: Liverpool starting to see more of the ball but can’t seem to do a lot with it. Salah is the latest to squirm on the edge area before poking a weak shot at Hednerson.

12:57 , Alex Young

25min: Awoniyi cuts inside, works an angle but can only direct a weak shot straight at Alisson.

12:53 , Alex Young

22min: Not for the first time this season, Liverpool aren't quite clicking yet.

Plenty of sloppy possession.

12:50 , Alex Young

19min: Lingard has nothing to do with the move so Forest manage to get a shot on target as Koyate sweeps in a shot from 18 yards.

12:48 , Alex Young

16min: At least three times a poor touch or pass from Lingard has been a Forest move break down. Not want you want from a supposed marquee signing.

12:41 , Alex Young

11min: From the resulting corner, Firmino cannot direct a free header on target.

12:41 , Alex Young

10min: First shot on target for Liverpool as Carvalho runs onto Salah’s ball forward to flick an effort at Henderson, who makes himself big.

12:39 , Alex Young

9min: Salah is leading the line for Liverpool in a 4-2-3-1, with Elliott and Carvalho either side of Firmino.

12:36 , Alex Young

6min: First sight of goal for Forest as Gibbs-White whips in a free kick from around 30 yards into the area, but Van Dijk easily heads away.

12:33 , Alex Young

3min: Liverpool with most of the ball in these very early stages, but Forest fans roar every time their team gets a touch.

Kick-off!

12:30 , Alex Young

1min: Here we go!

Almost time

12:22 , Alex Young

The home fans already look really up for this. Make no mistake, this is some atmosphere for Liverpool to walk out into. A tough start to the weekend, despite what the table suggests.

A fast start from either side could prove ket.

Historic fixture

12:08 , Alex Young

Some of you will not know the history behind this fixture.

Nottingham Forest and Liverpool dominated English and European football across the late 1970s and early 1980s, with the former winning two European Cups and one Division One title as the latter won two Division One titles and one European Cup.

Today is the first time the two sides have met in the league since the turn of the millennium. A 2-2 draw in 1999 saw Michael Owen among the scorers.

Score prediction

11:50 , Alex Young

The home support will be raucous but it’s hard to see how Cooper’s side will stop a Liverpool attack coming into form.

Liverpool to win 2-0.

Team news

11:43 , Alex Young

So, the leaks were correct. Darwin Nunez and Trent Alexander-Arnold drop out in two of five changes. The injured striker misses out altogether, while Alexander-Arnold has a place on the bench.

James Milner and Andy Robertson are among the names to come in, with one eye no doubt on the trip away to Ajax in midweek.

It's two changes for hosts Forest, so drop Brennan Johnson to the bench as Taiwo Awoniyi returns. Cheikhou Kouyate comes in for Orel Mangala.

Liverpool XI

11:33 , Alex Young

Darwin Nunez misses out entirely!

Nottingham Forest XI

11:32 , Alex Young

Here’s how the hosts look.

11:28 , Alex Young

Teams news is imminent.

All change for Forest

11:20 , Alex Young

Given the schedule, rotation is likely to play a big role for Steve Cooper.

Renan Lodi has missed Forest’s last three games so would appear unlikely to make it, while Jack Colback and Lewis O’Brien are also doubts.

Darwin is a doubt

11:08 , Alex Young

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Darwin Nunez is a fitness doubt amid reports he does not start this afternoon.

Luis Diaz (knee) and Diogo Jota (calf) will not return until after the World Cup, meaning Klopp may stick with the 4-2-2-2 system he has deployed in recent weeks. That would see Fabio Carvalho and Mohamed Salah flank Roberto Firmino, with Nunez perhaps off the bench.

Naby Keita and Ibrahima Kontate will miss this weekend’s match but will return to full training at the start of next week, while Klopp confirmed that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is not ready to start against Forest but is “one or two weeks ahead” of Keita in terms of his recovery.

James Milner is pushing for a start against a weak team, so Trent Alexander-Arnold could be rested after recent fitness niggles. The absence of Konate and Joel Matip means Joe Gomez should continue in the starting line-up as he looks to make a late bid for a place in England’s World Cup squad.

Early team news leaks claim both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Darwin Nunez do not start, no word on if either are on the bench.

We will know for sure in just about half an hour.
