Odell Beckham suggests Dave Gettleman look to himself to address 'culture problem'

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham spent part of his Monday on Twitter answering fans and critics alike about his trade from the New York Giants.

He addressed tweets both supportive and irrationally critical, calling out a fan who called him an inmate and responding to Giants fans sad to see him go.

Along the way, he took some not-so-veiled swipes at Giants general manager Dave Gettleman, who orchestrated his exit out of town.

The tweet storm came a day after Gettleman talked to NJ.com about a culture problem that he said used to exist on the Giants, a clear allusion to his thoughts on Beckham.

Gettleman: Giants don’t have a culture problem ‘anymore’

From the interview:

“There’s more to it than just collecting talent. There is a cultural thing to it that’s critical. I have not been on a team that’s gone to a Super Bowl that’s had a culture problem.”

Did he have one with the Giants?

“Not anymore,” he said with a satisfied smile.

Beckham’s tweet storm in response

Beckham took the comment as a show of disrespect from Gettleman, which — frankly — it was.

He pointed to his performance on the field while claiming to keep quiet about internal Giants drama and asking for the same from his former team.

He laughed at the idea of Gettleman not missing him as the Giants prepare for the 2019 season looking to avoid a third straight last-place finish in the NFC East.

He then called out a direct quote from Gettleman, who repeatedly promised not to trade Beckham after the Giants signed him to a long-term deal prior to last season.

The three-time Pro Bowler then suggested that Gettleman look elsewhere when searching for answers about a losing culture in New York.

Gettleman knows how to ‘smell’ a Super Bowl

Gettleman is under fire for his roster decisions with the Giants that also included sticking with a declining then 37-year-old Eli Manning at quarterback instead of looking to the future with last year’s quarterback-rich draft class.

He pointed to an ability to know what a Super Bowl team “should smell like” while touting his résumé that’s included various scouting and personnel roles for teams that have appeared in Super Bowls, including a job as a scout for the early 1990s Buffalo Bills.

“I’ve been to seven Super Bowls,” Gettleman told NJ.com. “I feel very strongly that I know what it should look like, what it should smell like, what it should taste like. And, so, you can look at me and say — well — I either know what I’m doing, or I’m a big fat rabbit’s foot. Neither one’s bad, right? I like my résumé so far.”

Rabbit’s foot or not, Gettleman apparently thinks a Super Bowl team tastes like something other than one with a transcendent talent lining up at wide receiver.
