The Office will be getting a remake, with a female-led cast being prepared for an Australian version of the show.

According to Variety, Amazon Prime Video will be producing the series, which will see Felicity Ward portray Hannah Howard, the chief of packaging company Flinley Craddick.

“In a post-COVID plot twist, Howard gets news from head office that her branch will be shutting down and that staff will have to work from home. She goes into survival mode, making promises she can’t keep and launching outlandish plots in order to keep her ‘work family’ together,” reads the logline.

The eight-part series will also star Edith Poor, Steen Raskopoulos, Shari Sebbens, Josh Thomson, Jonny Brugh, Pallavi Sharda, Susan Ling Young, Raj Labade, Lucy Schmit, and Firass Dirani, with filming set to begin later this year.

The series will be branded as an Amazon Original and launch on Prime Video next year to a worldwide audience - with the exception of the US.

Ricky Gervais, who created the original UK sitcom alongside Stephen Merchant, said of the project: “I’m very excited about Australia remaking my little show from the turn of the century. Office politics have changed a bit in 20 years, so can’t wait to see how they navigate a modern-day David Brent.”

The Australian version will be the 13th adaptation of Gervais’ and Merchant’s show, with The Office US running for nine seasons and 201 episodes. Actor Rainn Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute on the show, recently shared an idea he had for a future episode should a reunion occur.

“It would've been so much fun to film The Office during the pandemic. If we had pandemic episodes, that would've been amazing,” he said. “The Office writers were so great. They would've been able to spin that in some beautiful ways.”

The Office Australia will air on Amazon Prime Video in 2024.
