Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Manchester United can go all the way and win the Champions League after this result

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claimed Manchester United “can go all the way” and win the Champions League after producing one of the greatest comebacks in European history against Paris St-Germain on Wednesday night.

Marcus Rashford’s controversial late penalty secured a dramatic 3-1 win as United progressed to the quarter-finals on away goals, with Romelu Lukaku claiming that the club have now “decided” to give Solskjaer the job on a permanent basis as the players were left serenading the caretaker manager in the dressing room.

But United’s penalty – awarded by the video assistant referee ­Massimiliano Irrati after a handball by PSG defender Presnel Kimpembe from Diogo Dalot’s shot – prompted a furious reaction from Neymar. The PSG forward – who missed the game through injury – told the VAR officials to “go f*** yourselves”. “This is a disgrace, they put four people that know nothing about football in charge of looking at the replay for VAR,” Neymar wrote on Instagram. “There is no penalty. How can it be a handball when it hits his back! Go f*** yourselves.”

Solskjaer said he had not seen the incident and “hoped it’s the right decision” as he lauded his makeshift team’s display and setting his sights on lifting the trophy he ­famously won as a player in 1999.

“Of course we fancy ourselves,” Solskjaer said when asked if United could win the competition. “We can go all the way but we just have to wait for the draw and then take the game as it comes. We’ve had loads of injuries, suspensions but that was maybe a good thing today, we had a fresh team, loads of energy. We were humble enough to work hard and we had a team to do that.

“I’ve got some fantastic memories, that’s what football gives you, but it’s special when you’re a coach or a manager doing it with your staff and players. The dressing room in there was absolutely unbelievable – just to see the club together, with the owners, ex-managers, ex-players. It was a great atmosphere.”

Solskjaer has claimed he has yet to be offered the role on a permanent basis but Lukaku believes he has got it. “I think he’s got the job, it’s been decided,” he told former United captain Gary Neville in a television interview. “He should get it.” Neville asked Solskjaer: “How long a contract do you want and where do you want your statue built?” But the Norwegian remained coy over his future.

“I keep doing this job as best as I can every single day and let’s see where it takes us,” he said. “It’s been a fantastic time with the players and the staff I’ve got working with me, I’m gonna enjoy this job as long as I’ve got it, if it’s another two or three months, however long it is, I’m gonna enjoy it, I’m gonna smile.

“That [making the decision] is not my job to answer, not now. I’m just doing the best I can now and planning with the club for the future, or for us, it doesn’t matter if I’m here or not, I’m still giving my opinion and advice on what we should do next season.”

Solskjaer paid tribute to Rashford. “Fearless, the kid is, he’s got no doubt, no fear and when you’re young you don’t have any fear,” he said. Rashford said: “Everything seemed to be against us, but we believe that we can always do something. I think I was just trying to keep a cool head, those are the sort of things you practice every day. The wait before is the hardest.”
