2020 Olympics betting: Picks for the last round of group stage soccer games

Tuesday and Wednesday are pivotal Olympic soccer days.

The final round of the group stage games in the women’s tournament begins early Tuesday morning in the United States ahead of Wednesday’s conclusion of the group stage games in the men’s tournament.

The United States Women’s National Team is still the favorite to win gold at BetMGM despite sitting second in Group G after an opening game loss to Sweden. The U.S. is -110 to win the tournament ahead of the Netherlands and Great Britain at +500 each.

The U.S. should easily move on to the quarterfinals of the tournament. With three groups of four teams each, just four teams fail to advance to the knockout rounds of the tournament. Five teams currently have either 1 or 0 points heading into Tuesday’s games.

Here’s how the group standings look:

Group E

Great Britain, 6 points

Canada, 4 points

Japan, 1 point

Chile, 0 points

Group F

Netherlands, 4 points

Brazil, 4 points

China, 1 point

Zambia, 1 point

Group G

Sweden, 6 points

United States, 3 points

Australia, 3 points

New Zealand, 0 points

Great Britain is -400 to win Group E outright ahead of its game against Canada (+250 to win the group) on Tuesday. We like that bet because it’ll take a Canada victory to win the group. Great Britain still clinches the group with a tie.

The U.S. is -350 to beat Australia (3 a.m. ET) on Tuesday while a tie is at +450 and the Australians are underdogs at +575. We’re a fan of under 3.5 goals (-105) parlayed with the United States to win.

The U.S. will likely finish second in Group G, however. Sweden takes on New Zealand on Tuesday. New Zealand is a +1250 underdog to beat Sweden. Couple that with Sweden’s goal differential advantage and the Swedes are -5000 to win Group G while the U.S. is a +1400 longshot to take over the group win.

Men’s tournament

Things are a little more unpredictable on the men’s side, primarily because there are four groups instead of three. The top two teams in each group move on and there are at least two teams tied for the knockout positions in each group. Here’s how the standings look:

Group A

Japan, 6 points

Mexico, 3 points

France, 3 points

South Africa, 0 points

Group B

South Korea, 3 points

Honduras, 3 points

New Zealand, 3 points

Romania, 3 points

Group C

Spain, 4 points

Australia, 3 points

Argentina, 3 points

Egypt, 1 point

Group D

Brazil, 4 points

Ivory Coast, 4 points

Germany, 3 points

Saudi Arabia, 0 points

Oddsmakers like Korea’s chances to win Group B despite everyone sitting on three points. Korea is the only team in the group with a positive goal differential at +3 and that advantage should come in handy when it comes to advancing to the quarterfinals. Korea is -185 to win the group while Honduras is at +350. Romania (+600) and New Zealand (+800) are the underdogs to win the group and could advance with a win.

Betting Korea to win the group seems like a smart play, though a small hedge on Honduras may not be a bad idea either to cover your bases.

The best game of Wednesday could come at 7:30 a.m. ET when France takes on Japan. France is +185 to beat Japan (+120) on Wednesday and get to six points. But France is just +1600 to win the group because Mexico (-250) is a heavy favorite against South Africa (+750). France needs to beat Japan by two goals and have South Africa get a result against Mexico. We don’t think that will happen. Play the group straight up and bet either Japan (-350) or Mexico (+250) to win the group.
