One week after signing with Patriots, OT Jared Veldheer tells team he's retiring
The New England Patriots officially announced on May 13 that they’d signed veteran offensive tackle Jared Veldheer.
Eight days later, there is a report that Veldheer is retiring.
Signed for depth
Veldheer, 31, was brought aboard for some insurance and depth on the line for New England because 2018 first-round pick Isaiah Wynn missed all of his rookie season due to a ruptured Achilles, and 2019 third-round pick Yodny Cajuste underwent quadriceps surgery at the end of March.
A third-round pick of the Oakland Raiders in 2010, Veldheer spent the first four seasons of his career with Oakland, then the next four with the Arizona Cardinals.
In March 2018, the Cardinals traded Veldheer to the Denver Broncos for a late-round draft pick. He started and played in 12 games for Denver.
ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported on Tuesday that Veldheer has informed the Patriots of his decision to retire.
If New England still wants a veteran offensive lineman, the best player still unsigned is likely 36-year-old Donald Penn.
