The last thing any driver wants when they return to their car is to be met with a parking ticket stuck to the windscreen. But one expert says that drivers can throw some tickets 'straight in the bin'.

Which? reporter Lucia Ariano said motorists can appeal a parking ticket if signs are unclear, if the charge exceeds £100, or if there is a mitigating reason such as ill health, or if your car broke down.

In a post online, reported by the Echo, she explained that if the parking company which issued the ticket is not a member of an accredited trading association - either the British Parking Association or the Independent Parking Committee - drivers can ignore the fine. Lucia said: "[The company] won't be able to get your details from the DVLA to make you pay."

If the parking company is accredited, she says in the clip, you can write an appeal letter and should include evidence such as photos of poor signage and evidence of any mitigating circumstances.

Official bodies, like councils and the police can issue parking tickets, and these will usually need to be paid.
