  • Junior parkrun events across England will be able to return from Sunday, April 11.

  • All 5k parkrun events across England will return on Saturday, June 5.

parkrun has written to landowners, requesting permission for the return of events on their land from June 5.

The email, which can be read here, went out to the landowners of all 589 5K events in England, requesting ‘continued permission’ to deliver parkrun events from 5 June.

In a separate email to supporters, parkrun founder Paul Sinton-Hewitt said, 'If you can influence and encourage your local landowner to confirm permission quickly, please do so.

'I have always thought that parkrun represents the best of humanity. The positivity and togetherness, the support, the warm encouragement. The opportunity to escape, to connect with nature, to find health and happiness through regular community physical activity.

'We need all of that right now. More than ever.'

For now however, events will be returning in England only. Though the organisation is monitoring the situation in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, 'we still do not have the clarity needed to confirm when our events may be able to return,' parkrun said.

Meanwhile, junior parkrun events are currently returning across England. According to the parkrun website, 106 events took place last Sunday, while a further 29 junior events are set to return this coming weekend. The first junior parkrun event in Wales is due to return the following weekend on Sunday, 9 May.

This latest step follows the release of a report from disease expert Professor Clive Beggs, which stated that the risk of contracting Covid-19 at a parkrun event is "relatively low".

Prior to the report, parkrun published its own road map for the return of parkrun and junior parkrun events in England.

In a statement on the parkrun site at the time, chief executive Nick Pearson said, "Bringing back parkrun events is a huge step for so many of us toward the return of normal life. Of course nothing is guaranteed and there is still, understandably, some uncertainty and trepidation within the community. But working towards these dates gives us all hope."

With regard to the main parkrun events, Pearson said, 'the 5k events could technically return from Saturday 4 April. However, due to the other national restrictions in place, the expected level of infection at that time, and a number of our 5k events regularly exceeding 1,000 participants, we do not believe it would be appropriate for them to return this early.'

The return of parkrun will come with a few changes to the running of the events; in particular, junior parkrun will be limited to children aged 4-10 to help control numbers and remove any possible negative impact having older, more competitive children attending might have on the very young.

This means that all 5k parkrun events across England will return on Saturday, June 5, all things going to plan. Outside of the UK, parkrun is set to restart in the US on 22 May.

There are 729 parkrun events all over the UK.
