Arsene Wenger believes Patrick Vieira would be a “great asset” for Crystal Palace and wants him to leave his mark on the Premier League as a manager, after doing so as a player.

Former Arsenal captain Vieira has emerged as the clear front runner to take over at Selhurst Park and is in advanced talks with the club.

Palace have been on the hunt for a new manager since the end of last season, when Roy Hodgson stepped down after four years, and they have spoken to a number of candidates.

Lucien Favre and Nuno Espirito Santo both held extensive talks with the club, but Vieira is now poised to get the job and he has been backed to succeed by former Arsenal boss Wenger.

“We still wish him the best, and I think it would be great,” Wenger told beIN Sports France.

“First of all, he would be a great asset for Crystal Palace, and I also think that he has left such a mark on the Premier League’s pitch that I would like him to leave a mark outside the pitch.”

Vieira has been out of work since being sacked by French club Nice in December.

Since then, he has been advising and helping Swedish billionaire Daniel Ek in his attempts to buy Arsenal.

Vieira, however, has always wanted to manage in the Premier League and he explained last month how that was a “priority” for him.

“Listen, I always wanted and I still want to come to manage in the Premier League because what we were saying earlier about the passion of the fans,” he told the ITV Football Football Show.

“I believe that the Premier League is one of the most interesting leagues in the world.”
