Pep Guardiola reacts as Tottenham confirm Ange Postecoglou as new manager

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has welcomed Tottenham’s appointment of Ange Postecoglou.

On Tuesday, Spurs confirmed the arrival of the Australian on a four-year contract after Postecoglou’s trophy-laden spell at Celtic.

The former Hoops boss will officially start work on July 1 and Standard Sport understands he wants to bring John Kennedy, his assistant at Parkhead, with him.

Spurs are believed to be paying around £5m in compensation to the Glasgow giants after he rejected the offer of a new contract.

While the 57-year-old’s move to the Premier League has been met with scepticism in some circles given his lack of experience in elite European competition, Guardiola has issued his backing.

Postecoglou worked under the City Football Group’s umbrella during his three-year stint in charge of Yokohama F. Marinos and met Guardiola in Tokyo.

Asked whether it was a good appointment by Spurs, Guardiola said: “Absolutely, another exceptional manager is coming.

“I was lucky to meet him in Toyko years ago when he was the manager of Yokohama, one of the clubs in CFG [City Football Group]. It was an interesting chat. At Celtic he did an incredible job.

“Hopefully we can score one goal away.”
