Player ratings: Kompany classic
Vincent Kompany was head and shoulders above the rest as he led Manchester City to victory against Manchester United – and top spot in the Premier League.
Manchester City – 7/10
GK – Joe Hart (6) Did not have an awful lot to do, but was mostly solid apart from one flappy moment later on.
DR – Pablo Zabaleta (7) Always there and strong in the tackle, the Argentine had a fine game as Micah Richards was rested after recovering from injury.
DL – Gael Clichy (7) Like Zabaleta was solid defensively, but showed some attacking ability and almost scored a rare late goal.
DC – Vincent Kompany (8) The City skipper was a colossus at the back, restricting United to zero shots on target and scoring a towering header. Clear man of the match.
DC – Joleon Lescott (7) Did not put a foot wrong alongside Kompany as Wayne Rooney was left chasing shadows
MR – Samir Nasri (7) Showed great composure and technique throughout, a calming presence as City wound down the clock too.
ML – David Silva (6) A quiet game by his precocious standards but looked lively with his dribbling and running
MC – Yaya Toure (8) A monster in midfield as Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick struggled to impose themselves on the game. Did well going forward too.
MC – Gareth Barry (6) Kept it simple and held his lines well, with Toure given the freer role of the two. Hardly broke a sweat.
FC – Carlos Tevez (6) Buzzed about energetically enough but was mostly contained by United in what was not a classic for the forwards.
FC – Sergio Aguero (6) With dad-in-law Diego Maradona watching on, he tried gamely to impress but his shots were mostly off target. A few quality touches though.
Subs: James Milner (6), Nigel de Jong (6), Micah Richards (7)
Manchester United – 5/10
GK – David De Gea (6) No major errors and a few decent stops, but looks scared of set pieces and should have come up for a late corner.
DR – Phil Jones (5) Like most of his team-mates, had a poor game and still has a lot of work to do if he is to live up to his price tag.
DL – Patrice Evra 6) Was one of United’s better players, putting in some strong tackles and bounding down the left, but to little avail.
DC – Chris Smalling (5) Was at fault for losing Kompany for the goal and never fully recovered.
DC – Rio Ferdinand (6) Looked unflustered under pressure but his best days are behind him, particularly at the highest level.
MR – Nani (6) Tried his best and provided a decent threat from wide but struggled to find space.
ML – Ryan Giggs (5) Not his best game of recent months, could not get past Zabaleta with enough frequency, his lack of delivery leaving Rooney isolated.
MC – Park Ji-sung (5) A surprise starter and did nothing to justify his inclusion ahead of Antonio Valencia. Was poor and offered little.
MC – Paul Scholes (5) His return was heralded as the spark that reignited United’s season but he was not as effective here as he has been.
MC – Michael Carrick (5) Constantly caught in possession, weak in the tackle and lost his cool late on. Sorely exposed.
FC – Wayne Rooney (5) Was isolated by a lack of decent service but failed in his usual ploy to drop deep in an attempt to influence the play.
Subs: Danny Welbeck (6), Antonio Valencia (6), Ashley Young (6)
