Former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta said it was a poor short by KL Rahul on the ball he was dismissed on the first day of the Headingley Test.

On Wednesday, India got bowled out for 78 after captain Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat first. England bowlers led by James Anderson were in a different mood, looking to avenge the humiliation they faced at Lord’s more than a week ago.

Anderson was on the song right from his first over where he got the wicket of KL Rahul, who scored a splendorous century at Lord’s, on the fifth ball of the match. Rahul attempted to play a cover drive against the England pacer’s wide delivery pitched outside off-stump but tickled the ball to Jos Buttler behind the stumps.

Dasgupta was not pleased with Rahul’s execution with the shot in the first over of the game.

“One of the things that openers do, either with the bat or the ball, is to set the tone. KL Rahul’s dismissal in the first over kind of set the tone for the whole day. You can understand an outside edge, a good delivery, but that was a poor shot from KL Rahul, very first over,” Dasgupta said on BBC’s Test Match Special podcast.

After Rahul’s wicket, Anderson picked the wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli before Ollie Robinson got Ajinkya Rahane at the stroke of the lunch. Craig Overton, who replaced Mark Wood in the match, picked 3/14 and Sam Curran got two wickets on successive deliveries as England wrapped India’s innings within 40.4 overs.

Ishant Sharma started India’s bowling with two no-balls and conceded nine runs in the first over. The Indian bowlers could not show an ounce of their brilliance of Lord’s on Day 1 as the England openers composed their innings with discipline and calm. The hosts did not lose a single wicket at 120/0 and had a lead of 42 runs.

“And then, India never seemed to have kind of regained the composure, whether it was the batting or the bowling, fielding,” Dasgupta said.

“Eight runs, and it was a nine-ball over. Two no-balls, a wide. And an easy, wide, short outside the off-stump ball for Haseeb Hameed to get off the mark as well. It’s been a really bad day at the office for India,” he added.

India are leading 1-0 in the five-match Test series after their 151-run victory in the second Test.
