A new collection of portraits celebrating Black talent in hospitality has gone on display at restaurants across the capital, to mark Black History Month.

Well-regarded food photographer Julian George and chef Mike Reid – the culinary director of M Restaurants, as well as a familiar face from the rebooted Ready, Steady, Cook – have partnered for the series, which celebrates 28 top chefs across the industry. Those featured include 12:51's James Cochran, Akoko's William Chilila, Zoe Adjonyoh of Zoe's Ghana Kitchen and Reid himself.

Titled "Made You Look", the photographs aim to draw attention to the underrepresentation of BAME people within the hospitality field, and to challenge the industry to change. The full collection of prints will be unveiled this evening at M Threadneedle St, where they will hang for the month. They will also be available to see at the Boxpark sites in both Shoreditch and Croydon, as well as the Flannels store on Oxford Street.

"2020 has been one of the most challenging years we will ever face in our industry," said Reid of the project, "So to have an opportunity to work with some of the best talent both in front of and behind the camera on putting together this series has been an incredible way to welcome back hospitality and shine a light on the amazing black chefs in our kitchens today.

"This October, to celebrate Black history month, we want Made You Look to show how important representation is for all those aspiring to make it.”

George added: “It’s an incredible honour to have these amazingly talented chefs trust me to do their portraits and reflect a moment in time – a time when we celebrated their talents, their achievements and hopefully inspire the next generation of great chefs to come.”
