West Brom Fan View: Post-Pardew era comes too late for a great escape

Finally, after months of disappointing performances and poor results, Alan Pardew was finally sacked as West Brom head coach. His tenure at The Hawthorns will be remembered as one of the worst managerial appointments in our history, after losing 13 of his 19 league games in charge.

But it wasn’t just footballing issues that Pardew’s stint will be remembered for. The ill-fated mid-season training camp in Barcelona was an embarrassing episode for the whole club, with a number of senior players getting themselves into positions they should not have been in, it showed Pardew had lost the respect and authority of the dressing room, even at that early stage.

Pardew’s team selections bordered on ridiculous at times, omitting the likes of Sam Field, who’d been mightily impressive prior to his arrival, for the often invisible figure of Jake Livermore.

He selected Gareth Barry and Jonny Evans, even after their indiscretions, but the bit of passion shown by Krychowiak when he was substituted was enough to omit him from the starting 11 indefinitely.

Granted, we did play some good football in Pardew’s early games, notably in the win at Anfield, but Pardew’s obsession with 4-4-2 left us severely outnumbered and unable to get a foothold in most of our league fixtures, Chris Brunt even told him that in a dressing room row that followed one of our many defeats.

Darren Moore’s appointment as caretaker manager was a positive move, but it was done far too late, even after a positive performance in the draw against Swansea on Saturday, he was left with an impossible task. This team look relegated already and have done for a number of weeks, it should not have taken the board this long to see that this team needed a change of leadership.

Let’s back Big Dave’s boys till the rest of the season, and hope they can at least give the fans something to shout about over the last few games.
