Manchester United have sacked their manager Louis Van Gaal

The 64-year-old Dutchman guided Manchester United to the FA Cup on Saturday but looks to have paid the price for failing to have finished in the top four and missing out on the Champions League.

They only scored 49 league goals, too, their lowest total since 1989-90.

He leaves after completing two years of a three-year contract.

Former Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter and Porto boss Jose Mourinho is expected to be named as United manager.

Van Gaal took control of United after leading the Netherlands to the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil.

The Old Trafford club finished fourth in the Premier League in his first season in charge to qualify for the Champions League.

Saturday's FA Cup success at Wembley gave United a first trophy since Sir Alex Ferguson delivered the Premier League title in 2013 in his last season before retirement.

Today, he arrived at Manchester United's training ground at 8.45am and 45 minutes later, League Managers Association lawyer Paul Gilroy QC arrived.

Gilroy is the same employment barrister who acted for David Moyes when he was sacked as manager by United in 2014 but was initially refused entry before being allowed in.
