Friday night football kicks off this week, not because of some innovative new broadcasting deal, but because the English Defence League are on the march.

The EDL have a rally planned in Walsall on Saturday August 15, so West Midlands Police decided to bring forward Aston Villa’s home match with Manchester United to 7.45pm Friday so the events do not clash.

United have a Champions League play-off on Tuesday so the match could not played on Sunday.

Both teams won their opening fixtures so the winners will go clear at the top of the table.

Although the 2016-17 season will feature around 10 Friday night matches, there are no other Friday fixtures planned this season.

The Championship match between Wolves and Hull at Molineux has been put back to a Sunday midday kick-off as a result.
