Preps: Lady Tigers hold off Lady Panthers in defensive scrap-fest

Feb. 3—PRINCETON — Neither PikeView nor Princeton had very impressive offensive stats on Friday night.

The Lady Panthers and the Lady Tigers were too preoccupied with shutting each other down.

Maddie Stull scored an even dozen and Princeton scratched and clawed its way to a 40-30 win over visiting PikeView at Ralph Ball Court in Princeton.

"I don't think myself or [PikeView head coach Tracy Raban] would say that offense was the game tonight. It was a defensive struggle at times, for sure," said Princeton head coach Matt Smith.

Stull swatted away four shot attempts by the Lady Panthers (11-5) while pulling down eight rebounds and nabbing a pair of steals.

Carley Hurt scored 11 points for Princeton while rounding up six rebounds. Addisyn Sarver scored nine points with six rebounds while handing out a pair of assists and grabbing a pair of steals. She also had a block, as did Asia Collins, who led Princeton in steals with four on the night.

Haley Justice scored 11 points to lead PIkeView. Jaelynn Shrewsbury scored seven.

Princeton plays Capital at home on Monday.

Boys Games

James Monroe 45, GBC 31

LINDSIDE — Ryan Cole hit a trio of 3-pointers in the first quarter while Brady Baker scored six in the opening period and the Mavericks galloped off with a win over the visiting Crusaders.

Cole finished with 14 points while Baker scored 13 for James Monroe (11-2).

Keegan Davidson and Isaiah Kincaid led Greater Beckley Christian (9-5) with eight points apiece

MCA 68, Pipestem 50

PRINCETON — MJ Patton scored 40 points while pulling down seven rebounds and distributing five assists and the Cavaliers rode past Pipestem Christian in a home contest.

Gage Thompson scored 12 for MCA while Isaac Sharp had 10 points and five rebounds. Eli Patton scored six points with four boards.

Silas Mattox scored 17 points for the Panthers (11-6) while Trey Mattox added 13 points. Noah Weiss and Enoch Gonderman scored nine and eight, respectively.

MCA plays Tazewell at 2:45 p.m. today in the Lil Tony Webster Tournament at Brushfork Armory.

River View 86, Van 66

VAN — Jackson Danielson scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds yet again taking the initiative for the Raiders in an 86-66 win over Van on Friday night.

Danielson, a senior-year transfer from Wyoming County, kept his teammates engaged in the flow with six assists.

Gabe Lester fired up 19 points for River View (12-1) while big man Ethan Justice had 16 points, blocked five shots and pulled down 11 rebounds.

Josh Marcum and Markie Meadows scored 11 points apiece for the Bulldogs.

River View plays at Summers County on Wednesday night.

Late Girls Basketball

Bluefield 54, Oak Hill 50, OT

OAK HILL — The Bluefield girls basketball team broke a six-game skid on Thursday night, beating the Lady Red Devils on the road in overtime.

Arionna Dowell led all scorers with 24 points while Lady Beavers teammate Cara Brown chipped in 10 points.

Taysia Gray led Oak Hill with 19 points.

Bluefield improved to 5-10 on the year.

Beckley-Stratton 16

BECKLEY — Kylee Jackson scored 18 points in a big Princeton Middle School win over Beckley-Stratton on the road.

Brystal Winfrey scored 16 points with nine rebounds for the Lady Tigers (13-1) while Addison McCabe had seven points and six steals and Maddy Anderson had six points and 10 rebounds.
