Ex-cricketer turned commentator Ramiz Raja is one of the frontrunners for the post of chairman in Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Prime Minister Imran Khan is expected to meet with him to discuss matters very soon.
Imran is also a Patron-in-Chief of the PCB so he gets to select two names who can take the post. The current chairman, Ehsan Mani, ends his term on August 25 and although he is keen on continuing, the higher-ups weren’t satisfied with his regime.
Mani brought about various changes in the domestic structure which hurt the associate level players. There was widespread criticism on the issue but it was glued up by the board after it offered administrative and field-level jobs to the cricketers.
The next prospect, Ramiz is expected to meet with the PM, where Mani will also be present. Imran wants an ex-cricketer at the helm as experience matters in such roles and therefore, Ramiz rose up as a viable candidate for the job.
A PCB source had stated that Ramiz is currently leading the race considering his international contacts and reputation in the cricketing fraternity.
“Ramiz appears to be the ideal candidate as he is well educated, well-versed, and has international contacts due to his long years as a commentator. He was also CEO of the board in the past and left due to his other commitments,” the source revealed.
Ramiz Raja’s appointment could benefit players and the board, as per Kamran Akmal
Former ‘keeper-batsman Kamran Akmal backed Ramiz Raja to improve the management if he is elected as the chairman. Pakistan Cricket’s stocks would rise and they can develop their financial systems with Ramiz’s appointment, as per Kamran Akmal.
“He hasn’t been going for commentary duties in the last couple of series and that gave us some signals for the future. A cricketer coming in as a chairman would benefit domestic cricket. It will bring in money.”
“There was a lot of talk about bringing in money by commercializing so that players get money. Ramiz (Raja) bhai coming in will benefit players financially. Maybe the teams might improve as well. Management might get better as well because he has been a captain himself,” Kamran asserted.
The board has appointed retired judge, Azmat Sheikh, as the selection commissioner to conduct the elections for the post of PCB chairman.
