Princeton girls hold off Oak Hill in Class AAAA sectional battle

Feb. 21—PRINCETON — The Governor is coming to town.

Asia Collins scored a team high 11-points and the Princeton girls basketball team held off Oak Hill 43-22 in a defensive struggle in a Class AAAA, Region 3, Section 2 tournament basketball game at Ralph Ball Court in Princeton, on Tuesday night.

"It was a defensive scrap to be sure," said Princeton girls head basketball coach Matt Smith. "We just ended up scoring a few more points than they did."

In addition to her points, Collins corralled 11 rebounds while handing out three assists and collecting three steals.

Maddie Stull had 14 rebounds to go with her eight points, while Kalee Wright had six points and nine rebouds, Kendra Conner had six points and three rebounds and Alli Parks had seven points.

Taysia Gray, Cara Smith and Ali Williams each scored five points for the Lady Red Devils.

The Lady Tigers (15-6) will advance to face Greenbrier East — which is coached by West Virginia Governor Jim Justice — at home for the sectional title on Thursday night. Tip-off at Ralph Ball Court is set for 7:30 p.m.

Class A Girls Sectional

River View 51, Montcalm 27

BRADSHAW — Kaci Hatfield scored 16 points and the Lady Raiders demoted the Lady Generals in a Class A, Region 3, Section 2 girls tournament game at River View.

Kalee Blankenship and Abigail Pruitt added 12 points apiece for River View, which will travel to face top-seeded James Monroe in Thursday's sectional title game.

Mady Hudgins and Summer Williams scored eight points apiece for Montcalm.

James Monroe 95, Mount View 30

LINDSIDE — Maggie Boroski lit up the night with 28 points in a decisive sectional win over the visiting Lady Golden Knights in a sectional semifinal clash at James Monroe High School.

Mya Dunlap fired up 18 for the Lady Mavericks. Abby Mathis scored 16 points, Mary Beth Meadows had 11 and Ava Dunlap chipped in 10.

Tay Wray scored 15 points for Mount View, which successfully completed its revival season after having cancelled the 2023 campaign outright due to low numbers.

James Monroe plays River View at home on Thursday in the sectional title game.

Region 2D Boys Tournament

BLUEFIELD, Va. — The Graham boys basketball team defeated visiting Central Wise 71-56 in Tuesday's opening round game in the VHSL Region 2D boys basketball tournament at Graham Middle School.

The G-Men will advance to face Gate City in a 7:30 p.m. regional semifinal game at Gate City Middle School Gymnasium on Thursday night. The Blue Devils defeated Marion 70-65 on Tuesday night.

Virginia High defeated Ridgeview 75-54 at Bristol, Va. on Tuesday while Union edged Lebanon 48-47 at Big Stone Gap, Va. The Bearcats will face Union in a 6 p.m. game at Gate City on Thursday.

Mount View 42

BLUEFIELD — Kamron Gore scored 20 points and pulled down 7 rebounds to lead the Beavers to a victory over visiting Mount View in a rare game held at the Bluefield High School gymnasium.

RJ Hairston scored 12 points with nine rebounds and five assists and Greyson Parris added nine points.

Matthias Johnson scored 16 points to pace the Golden Knights. Zyon Jackson scored 14.
