PSG vs Bayern Munich - LIVE!

Kingsley Coman once again struck against his former side as Bayern Munich earned a 1-0 win over PSG at the Parc des Princes. It was the Frenchman, who came through the PSG academy, producing the only goal three years ago when these two sides met in the Champions League final, and that proved to be the case in the first leg of this last-16 tie.

PSG produced a dreadful performance on the whole, sloppy at the back and without any sort of threat in attack until the closing stages. The Bayern goal was coming from the first whistle and, although they had to wait until after the break, it came through a back-post volley from Coman.

Kylian Mbappe had the ball in the back of the net twice after coming on, as PSG finally woke up, but he was denied on each occasion by the offside flag. Bayern held on to ensure they take an advantage to Munich for the reverse fixture, even with Benjamin Pavard seeing red late on for a second yellow card.

Post-match thoughts from Mbappe

22:09 , Matt Verri

“Everyone needs to be healthy, sleep well, eat well. We can do something there.

“If we are more offensive, they are uncomfortable. Let’s quickly move on and go again.”

Only goal of the night...

FT: PSG 0-1 Bayern Munich

21:56 , Matt Verri

And that is that for the first leg.

Bayern will take a narrow lead back to Germany, after Kingsley Coman once again struck against his former club.

PSG really poor for much of the match, but they’re still in the tie.

21:54 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: Doesn’t look like that will cost Bayern here, though it leaves them with an issue for the return fixture.

Bayern were already just looking to see this out, even more the case now.

21:53 , Matt Verri

90+1 mins: Four minutes added on.

AND PAVARD IS OFF! That’s been coming too. Messi brought down, desperate lunge just outside the box. Second yellow card and he’s off.

Just about avoided conceding a penalty.

21:49 , Matt Verri

88 mins: Vitinha now fires an effort at Sommer, good save. Either side of him though and he wasn’t smelling it.

PSG have woken up in the past ten minutes, could have done with something like this from the start. They were awful for 70 minutes.

21:46 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Stunning block! Mendes causing havoc, cut back for Messi and he looks certain to score but Pavard throws himself in the way. PSG all of a sudden on the charge.

That halts it though. Corner swung in, whistle goes for a foul in the middle.

NO GOAL!

21:44 , Matt Verri

IT’S OFFSIDE!

Mbappe flew back to the centre circle with the ball - he’s going to have to take it back.

Mendes inches offside, the goal doesn’t count. Bayern survive that scare... just.

GOAL! PSG 1-1 Bayern Munich | Kylian Mbappe 82'

21:43 , Matt Verri

OUT OF NOTHING!

He’s not fully fit at all but Mbappe has them level. Mendes gets in behind, fired across the face of goal and Mbappe hammers it home from close range.

21:42 , Matt Verri

81 mins: Mendes bulldozes his way through, low cross into the box and Neymar can’t quite get there. De Ligt hacks it out of play.

He’s been as threatening as anyway for PSG, has Mendes. Frighteningly quick.

21:40 , Matt Verri

79 mins: Mbappe showing what he’s capable of in bursts. Not fit enough to do it very often, but he is occasionally bursting into life with that pace.

Bayern still firmly in control though, passing it around at will at the back.

21:36 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Danilo off for PSG, Vitinha on for the final 15 minutes.

Coman has limped off, hasn’t recovered from that earlier challenge. Gnabry on in his place. Muller also replaces Choupo-Moting.

21:34 , Matt Verri

73 mins: GOOO.... NO!

Mbappe is in behind, they’re not catching him. Saved! Rebound falls for Neymar, hammered at goal and saved again.

Parried into the path of Mbappe who taps it home, but he’s well offside.

21:31 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Kimpembe into the book, cleans out Coman. They were having a nice chat on the pitch before the match but that wasn’t particularly friendly.

Bayern will be actually pretty frustrated if this finishes only 1-0. They could have put this tie to bed, so much better than PSG.

21:29 , Matt Verri

68 mins: The gulf in quality is absolutely incredible. Bayern a slick machine, PSG hoping one of their front three can beat six players.

Neymar and Messi barely moving, Mbappe looks like a man that can’t really move. Not a great combination.

21:25 , Matt Verri

64 mins: OFF THE POST!

Stunning save from Donnarumma. PSG being ripped apart down their left, ball cut back to Choupo-Moting and somehow the goalkeeper turns it onto the woodwork from close range.

AND ANOTHER SAVE! Corner in, Pavard powers the header at goal but he’s denied.

21:23 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Coman skips past his man again, cross falls for Choupo-Moting at the back post and his acrobatic effort is a comfortable enough save for Donnarumma in the end.

At the other end, Messi tries to skip his way through in the box. No space at all.

21:22 , Matt Verri

61 mins: Kimmich 30 yards out, nobody near him. Waits for an option, still nobody near him. Looks up, still nobody near him, so eventually goes for goal.

Miles over the bar. The Parc des Princes is very quiet and you can’t blame the home fans.

21:20 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Still no sign of a PSG press. Strolling around, so easy for the likes of Kimmich and the Bayern defence to knock it around.

Ramos with another good interception, he’s just about keeping that defence together by himself.

21:18 , Matt Verri

57 mins: Here he comes. Fit or not, Mbappe is on. Soler the man to make way.

And 16-year-old Zaire-Emery is also off, Ruiz replacing him. Still plenty of time for PSG to at least get something from this.

21:16 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Well that’s been coming since the first minute. PSG miles off it.

Verratti looks to ping a ball over the top for Neymar, too much on it though. Pavard clears it away, Bayern able to comfortably play their way forward again.

GOAL! PSG 0-1 Bayern Munich | Kingsley Coman 53'

21:14 , Matt Verri

BAYERN TAKE THE LEAD!

Coman does it again for Bayern against his former side! Davies swings the cross in, Coman free at the back post and he just cushions a volley into the back of the net.

Not great goalkeeping. At all.

21:11 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Really good from Zaire-Emery, pretty much the first we’ve seen of the 16-year-old. Turns Davies nicely and bursts away down the left wing.

Ball into the box, Neymar sliding in at the near post and he wins a corner. Taken short, eventually in towards Danilo at the back post. Sommer flaps at it and takes plenty of Danilo, offside flag up though.

21:09 , Matt Verri

48 mins: Outrageous pace from Mendes, knocks the ball past Pavard, who has at least a five-yard headstart, and still gets there first. Pavard shoves him over, can’t do that too many more times after his yellow card in the first half.

Smoke filling the stadium at the moment, after a flurry of flares were let off.

21:07 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Changes from both sides at the break. Cancelo off, Davies on in his place. Marquinhos has replaced Hakimi for PSG.

Mbappe is skipping along the side of the pitch warming up. We’re going to find out just how fit he is.

Back underway!

21:06 , Matt Verri

Up and running for the second-half!

Some goals. Please.

Not. Good.

21:00 , Matt Verri

20:57 , Matt Verri

Nearly 60% possession for Bayern, ten shots with two of those on target. One shot in all for PSG, that poor free-kick from Messi with the final kick of the half.

Neymar has barely had a kick, while Messi has often been deep in his own half when he’s got on it. Big improvement needed.

20:53 , Matt Verri

Time to warm that hamstring up...

Mbappe clearly isn’t fully fit, maybe not even half-fit. But Galtier has a big decision to make.

Ideally he wouldn’t risk the Frenchman, but his team clearly need him. Maybe the PSG boss opts to just keep it tight tonight and unleash Mbappe in Germany.

HT: PSG 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:49 , Matt Verri

Well that sums it up. Messi tamely clips it straight into the wall.

PSG awful, Bayern pretty good but only a couple of chances for them despite dominating the ball.

Hosts have to improve. A lot.

 (AP)
(AP)

20:48 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Hello. Messi on the edge of the box, draws in De Ligt and wins the free-kick.

Absolutely ideal position here. PSG with a very decent chance to somehow put themselves in front.

20:46 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Great save from Donnarumma!

Coman roars past Hakimi, ball in just too high for Choupo-Moting but it’s headed out straight to Kimmich.

Catches the strike so sweetly, but the PSG goalkeeper gets down really well to save. PSG will be absolutely thrilled that this is still goalless.

20:44 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Not sure Zaire-Emery has had a touch yet, tough night for the 16-year-old. Hasn’t been given much help at all.

Verratti very nearly sets Neymar away, too much on the pass though and the Brazilian was offside anyway. Apart from that...

20:42 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Coman whips the cross in, Goretzka has made the run into the box but Ramos tracks it and nods behind.

He’s been the only PSG player to impress so far. Less said about the rest the better.

20:40 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Camera keeps cutting to Mbappe on the bench. If his hamstring is even vaguely working he might have to come on.

PSG haven’t had a shot yet, not even looked like having one. Bayern with eight so far.

20:38 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Messi dropping deeper and deeper, desperately trying to get involved. Doesn’t trust his team-mates to be able to pass it beyond the halfway line.

He threatens to burst into life there, skips away from a couple of challenges before Pavard comes sliding in. Crowd woke up immediately there.

20:35 , Matt Verri

33 mins: This really has been woeful from PSG. Keep giving the ball away so cheaply.

Messi tries to do it all by himself but he’s surrounded by three Bayern shirts and loses the ball. Even he couldn’t wriggle out of that.

20:32 , Matt Verri

30 mins: It’s Kimmich... flicks off the top of the wall and behind for a corner. Danilo got the touch.

Kimmich takes this too, Choupo-Moting with the flick on but Neymar is back in his own box to clear. We then have the fourth instalment of Neymar vs Pavard - PSG man with the foul.

Coman with a glorious cross in, Choupo-Moting heads wide. Huge chance!

20:30 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Bayern whip the corner in, comes to Coman who lets fly from distance. Well over the bar.

The visitors quickly win it back though, Musiala shoved over by Hakimi right in front of the referee. Bizarre.

Kimmich and Sane standing over this, just outside the box.

20:29 , Matt Verri

26 mins: First booking of the match and it goes to Pavard, as he goes straight through Neymar. Poor challenge.

Long time left for him to be on a yellow, got to imagine Neymar will be running straight at him now.

20:27 , Matt Verri

25 mins: A one-man press from Neymar, all the way up the pitch to Sommer. None of his team-mates backed him up though, so all pretty pointless despite the Brazilian’s efforts.

Kimmich clips a great ball out to Coman, scuffs a volley straight at the goalkeeper. Bayern still unable to make the most of their dominance.

20:25 , Matt Verri

23 mins: That doesn’t improve Neymar’s mood. He gets his body across Kimmich and gives away a soft free-kick, decent position for Bayern.

Whipped in, Donnarumma off his line confidently to punch it away to safety. Midway through the first half... it’s not been the best.

20:23 , Matt Verri

20 mins: Neymar running at the Bayern defence on the left, he’s got two to beat and decides to just run into Pavard instead.

Down holding his face, Michael Oliver could not be less interested. Not getting a free-kick for that.

Brazilian has stayed down, play eventually stopped. I imagine he’ll be ok.

20:20 , Matt Verri

18 mins: Coman skips past his man, dinks a ball into the middle but Ramos is there to head it away. He’s made a really good start to the match.

The boos from the home fans have started again, with all 11 PSG players within 30 yards of their own goal. Musiala looks to slide in Cancelo, Soler cuts it out.

20:18 , Matt Verri

16 min: Great delivery again from Cancelo, though once more it just evades his team-mates.

Messi plays it to Soler, who tries to play it back but instead finds a Bayern shirt... that’s the last time Messi gives the ball to him.

20:16 , Matt Verri

14 mins: PSG cannot live with the intensity from Bayern. Big problems for them already. Coman bursts forward this time, slides it through to Choupo-Moting but he is just about offside.

PSG look to break, Messi swings the ball wide to Neymar. He cuts inside, tries to play it back to Messi but the red shirts slam the door shut this time. That’s as good as it’s got for the hosts.

20:13 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Ramos with a good interception in his own box, defending is a bit chaotic from PSG but they just about get it clear. Cancelo then swings in a cross, straight at Donnarumma.

Neymar and Messi have pretty much dropped to the edge of their box to try and get on the ball. Doubt that’s the gameplan.

20:10 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Messi with a smart turn, as PSG win it back and for the first time they can break.

Zaire-Emery in space, he looks to slide the ball through to Neymar who would have been in but Cancelo gets back well on the cover.

That brings a brief halt to the boos from the home fans, who aren’t thrilled with the amount of possession Bayern have had.

20:08 , Matt Verri

6 mins: Bit more like it from PSG, knocking the ball around for the first time. A lovely touch from Messi in there too, par for the course.

Bayern are pressing without the ball, looking to quickly win it back. PSG... are not.

20:05 , Matt Verri

3 mins: PSG struggling to push up from their own box, beyond Messi and Neymar strolling around by the halfway line. Bayern dominating possession.

Cancelo cuts inside off the right wing, curls a cross into the box and there’s just too much on it for Choupo-Moting. Great delivery from the full-back.

20:03 , Matt Verri

1 mins: Well that’s a very decent start.

Choupo-Moting just bundles his way through a couple of challenges, tries his luck from distance and slices the effort wide. Bayern have flown out of the blocks.

KICK-OFF!

20:02 , Matt Verri

THE CHAAAAAAAAAAAMPIONS.

Time to get up and running in Paris!

Here we go!

19:57 , Matt Verri

The teams are out onto the Parc des Princes. Plenty of shouting in the tunnel.

Michael Oliver is on officiating duty tonight - if we could have a night without some VAR drama that would be lovely.

Time for the Champions League anthem!

Not long now...

19:53 , Matt Verri

Players will be in the tunnel any minute now.

Huge clash coming up, between two sides who will fancy their chances of going all the way in Europe.

First legs can be tight affairs, but got to think there will be goals in this one considering the talent both on the pitch and on the benches.

Potentially a final PSG run for Messi...

19:44 , Matt Verri

Messi back in the side, looking to play his part in leading PSG to the Champions League this season.

He’s won the World Cup now, so he’s ticked off everything on his bucket list you’d imagine. Winning another Champions League title would be a fun little added bonus.

Out of contract at PSG in the summer too, so this could be his last chance with the club.

Goals on the menu?

19:38 , Matt Verri

Plenty of talk about the 2020 Champions League final, but these sides have faced off since then.

In the quarter-finals the following season, PSG won a thrilling first leg in Germany 3-2, before they were edged out 1-0 on home soil to progress on away goals.

A repeat of that first-leg entertainment tonight would be very welcome...

Neither side firing on all cylinders

19:23 , Matt Verri

Not hugely comfortable for either of these two sides in the league at the moment.

Bayern are just point clear at the top of the Bundesliga, while Eintracht Frankfurt in sixth are only eight points behind. Much closer than we’re used to.

PSG are four points clear of Marseille, with Monaco a couple of points further back.

Nagelsmann: Champions League special for PSG

19:13 , Matt Verri

PSG have been in patchy form domestically, but Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann is expecting them to click into gear tonight.

The Ligue 1 side have lost to Monaco and Marseille in the past week, though it is the Champions League that PSG value above all else.

“We don’t have much focus on the situation PSG has in the league, the Champions League is another competition,” Nagelsmann said earlier this week.

“I think for PSG it has a special meaning and it is very important.”

Cancelo makes European bow for debut

19:00 , Matt Verri

Kimmich is back from suspension for Bayern, and lines up in midfield alongside Goretzka.

Cancelo makes his first European appearance for the club after his loan move from Manchester City, while Sane and Coman start in wide areas and Choupo-Moting leads the line.

Plenty of decent options off the bench - Muller, Gnabry and Davies just a few of those waiting in reserve.

Zaire-Emery makes history

18:53 , Matt Verri

One back, one on the bench for PSG. Messi returns and is fit to partner Neymar, but Mbappe has to settle for a place on the bench. Not a bad substitution to make.

Verratti is fit to start, while 16-year-old Zaire-Emery also gets the nod in midfield. He was born in 2006. Yes, 2006. It’s not fair really.

Battle to re-enter Champions League top table

18:39 , Matt Verri

The 2020 Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain stands out as an anomaly in recent seasons.

Kingsley Coman’s goal proved the only one of the only final in the past five not contested between some combination of Premier League clubs and Real Madrid. Bayern’s success makes them the only winners from outside that group in seven years, too.

The context, as the pair prepare to meet in the last-16 tonight, casts two of Europe’s biggest clubs as strange outsiders again.

In the red corner, Bayern, in the blue, PSG, but between them, in the ring proper, animosity is brewing once more, between Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona — the trio of holdout European Super League clubs who launched a new and somewhat airy plan for the competition last week — and the Premier League elite, who withdrew from the original ESL and have perhaps realised since that their own division is on its way to becoming a de-facto version.

Galtier will be “sensible” with Mbappe

18:32 , Matt Verri

Kylian Mbappe was named in the PSG squad yesterday, after he returned to first-team training.

However, Christophe Galtier has insisted he will not take risks with the Frenchman’s fitness, suggesting at best Mbappe will be among the substitutes.

“I will make the most sensible decision,” Galtier told reporters.

“The first person I’ll listen to will be Kylian. He won’t just be on the bench for the sake of it.”

Familiar foes...

Tonight is a repeat of the 2020 Champions League final, when these two sides met in Lisbon.

Kingsley Coman was the hero that night, with his second-half strike enough to make Bayern European champions for a sixth time.

City favourites for first Champions League title

18:09 , Matt Verri

Two of the favourites to win the Champions League this season, but only one will make it through to the quarter-finals.

No surprise to see Manchester City at the top of the market, though whoever comes through this tie will really fancy their chances of a deep, deep run.

Standard Sport prediction

18:02 , Matt Verri

Neither of these two sides are at their peak, with Bayern firmly in a Bundesliga title race and PSG only winning two of their past five Ligue 1 matches.

Even if Messi and Mbappe miss out with injury, the hosts should have enough to score, though Bayern will back themselves to get the better of a vulnerable PSG defence.

Draw, 1-1.

Bayern team news

17:55 , Matt Verri

Thomas Muller is a slight doubt for Bayern after he was forced off at the weekend with injury, though the German has since insisted it is “not serious”.

Joshua Kimmich is back and available after suspension and Joao Cancelo could make his first Champions League start for the club, but Sadio Mane remains out.

PSG team news

17:47 , Matt Verri

PSG are sweating over the fitness of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe for tonight’s first leg.

Messi is battling a muscle injury, one that kept him out of the defeat to Monaco over the weekend, while Mbappe has only just returned to training as he steps up his recovery from a hamstring injury picked up at the start of the month.

Marco Verratti is also a doubt with a hip injury.

Predicted PSG XI: Donnarumma; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Kimpembe, Mendes; Danilo; Fabian, Verratti, Vitinha; Messi, Neymar.
