Pulaski wins district title at the buzzer

Feb. 28—MT. VERNON — It was a hotly anticipated rematch between Pulaski County and Rockcastle County on Wednesday night, with the 47th District crown on the line.

Both teams couldn't get much going in the way of offense in the first half, with both Pulaski and Rockcastle shooting just about as poorly as one could imagine. After falling behind early, it was Sydney Martin that propelled them ahead at the end of the first 16 minutes, as she scored 14 of their 18 first half points. It was a back-and-forth affair in the second half, with this low scoring game being pushed into an overtime period. When it looked like all was lost after Rockcastle went ahead late in overtime, it was Brooklyn Thomas providing a classic finish with an offensive put-back that left her finger tips with .1 seconds left, giving the Lady Maroons a 44-43 victory and giving them a second-straight district title.

Both Pulaski County and Rockcastle County will advance on to next week's 12th Region Tournament to be hosted by Lincoln County. Look for a full game story in Friday's edition of the Commonwealth Journal.
