Punchestown Festival Tips: Oddschecker give their verdict on day two of the Festival

16:20 – Punchestown: MINELLA TILL DAWN – 11/4 1pt
The Gordon Elliott-trained 5yo looked set to claim victory last time out at Fairyhouse in Grade 2 company before taking a heavy fall race at the last. If proving no worse for the mishap, he’s well worth backing to gain compensation in the second race of the day at Punchestown. His main market rival Battleford has been disappointing over hurdles this year and there are question marks surrounding the rest of the field.

16:55 – Punchestown: Presenting Percy – 11/4 1pt
Pat Kelly’s gelding has looked a Graded horse masquerading as a handicapper all season, rising 44lb in the handicap since his Galway win in October. He showed his quality when smashing his rivals in the Pertemps Hurdle Final under a big weight at Cheltenham in March and today sees him pitched in against two fellow Festival winners in the shape of Penhill and Champagne Classic. Davy Russell again takes the ride and the man for the big occasion is expected to deliver the goods again aboard the 6yo.

17:30 – Punchestown: Sizing John – Evs 2pts
Sizing John has transformed from Douvan’s punch-bag, to a champion in his own right and today he can write his name into the history books by completing the unique Gold Cup “Triple Crown”. On the form Sizing John has shown this season, we cannot see him being beaten and he’s expected to cap off an amazing season for trainer Jessica Harrington and jockey Robbie Power. Some punters will be worried his season’s exertions may catch up with the 7yo, but with a 40-day break he should be raring to go on ground he should relish.

18:05 – Punchestown: Fayonagh – 2/1 2pts
The Gordon Elliott inmate produced possibly the best Cheltenham story at this year’s festival when she stormed home to win the Champion Bumper and today is her chance to prove that performance wasn’t just a one off. Her extraordinary finish up the famous hill at Prestbury Park cannot be ignored and if she can show anything like that level today of performance today she should walk away with victory. Her jockey Jamie Codd described her this week as “the best bumper horse I’ve ridden”, some statement from the ‘Codfather’.

18:40 – Vent De La Cote – 17/1 0.5pts each-way
The penultimate race at Punchestown is wide open handicap with many of the field in with a shout. However, we’ve looked to hunt out a bit of value and think Vent De La Cote could run a nice race at big odds. The Martin Brassil-trained 9yo has been a very popular selection with the punters this morning and has shortened in to 16/1 from as big as 33’s last night. If the market vibes prove right then he could be an each-way steal at the prices.
