Andy Murray vs Jordan Thompson LIVE: Queen’s tennis latest as Brit pulls out of tournament with injury

Andy Murray had to default in the first set of his second-round match at Queen’s against Jordan Thompson with an injury.

Murray, a former world number one, earned a hard-fought 6-3 3-6 6-3 win over Alexei Popyrin on Tuesday to progress in the tournament, but was limping in the warm up and had to get the trainer out after the first three games, before continuing for another two more.

Despite hobbling around the court and not being able to serve with any power, Murray managed to win one game, but called the match with the score 1-4. The 37-year-old has dropped out of the world’s top 100, and the win over Popyrin was only his seventh of the season as he has continued to fight against ruptured ankle ligaments in March and a back injury.

Murray has won Queen’s a record five times, but is not expected to extend his career beyond Wimbledon and the summer Olympics in Paris.

Andy Murray will be in action at Queen’s

  • Andy Murray was forced to retire from his second round match at Queen’s

  • The former world No 1 pulled out due to a back injury

  • Murray later gave an update with his Wimbledon participation in doubt

  • Full order of play on Centre Court on Thursday

Murray in his press conference:

19:30 , Kieran Jackson

On chances of playing at Wimbledon:

“I wouldn’t know. I didn’t get the right side of my back treated after the French Open. All tennis players have degenerative joints in the back but it’s all predominantly been left-sided for me, for pretty much my whole career. Never had too many issues with the right side. Maybe there’s something which can be done between now and then with my right-side, will have a scan tomorrow and re-check and see if what can be done.

“I don’t know exactly what it would be, I don’t know exactly what the problem is. I just know I haven’t experienced that before, the back pain today and yesterday and the last 10,11 years - but never experienced that before. I don’t know what the procedure will be or what to expect.”

Murray in his press conference:

19:16 , Kieran Jackson

“I was in similar discomfort yesterday, went on to play the match and then the discomfort was manageable. It didn’t feel too dissimilar to yesterday, slightly worse. If it felt like that before the match, I wouldn’t have played but from my pre-match warm-up to the match court, I wish I hadn’t go on court to be honest. I didn’t realise until I was walking to go on court, in hindsight I wish I hadn’t go on there. Pretty awkward for everyone, nothing I can do.

“Part of you that wants to go out there and see if it gets better, with a bit of treatment, but that wasn’t the case.”

Murray in his press conference:

19:09 , Kieran Jackson

Do you know where this leaves you going forward?

“Well no, not entirely. I haven’t seen a specialist or scans. The treatement I had on my back after the French Open was predominantly left-sided, this was my right leg. I’ve had back issues for a long time, last 10 years or so, common for a lot of players but I’ve never had that loss of coordination and control and strength before.”

Murray in his press conference:

18:58 , Kieran Jackson

“I was pretty happy with the win yesterday. My back has been a problem for quite a while, been sore in the build-up to the tournament, pretty sore in my match yesterday and sore through today - but I was able to manage it, it was not comfortable playing, but I was able to manage it.

“During my pre-match warm-up, I was pretty uncomfortable and then I walked up the stairs to go out on court and didn’t have normal strength in my right leg, not a usual feeling. The first two balls I hit in the warm-up, my right leg was so uncordinated. My leg was not working properly.”

Murray in his press conference:

18:50 , Kieran Jackson

Asked what happened out on court today, he said: “I’ve been struggling with my back for a while. Had pain in my right leg, no motor control, no co-ordination. And yeah, couldn’t move.”

NEW: Andy Murray unsure if he will play at Wimbledon

18:38 , Kieran Jackson

Andy Murray admits he doesn’t know at this stage if he will play at his final Wimbledon after being forced to retire from his match at Queen’s on Wednesday.

The 37-year-old was forced to withdraw from his second-round match after just five games at Queen’s against Jordan Thompson, due to a back injury.

Murray, Britain’s greatest tennis player in the Open Era, stated before Queen’s that he is set to end his 20-year professional career this summer, either after Wimbledon or the Paris Olympics, and was penciled in to partner older brother Jamie in the doubles at the All England Club - the first time the pair would have combined at a Grand Slam tournament.

Yet speaking to the press at Queen’s afterwards, Murray stated he will get a scan on his back tomorrow, adding that he has been “struggling with his back for quite a while” and had no co-ordination in his right leg out on court.

Murray won his first tour-level match in nearly three months on Tuesday, coming through in three sets against Alexei Popyrin after one hour and 51 minutes, and showed no clear signs of discomfort afterwards.

Murray was also set to play doubles this week at Queen’s but his partner, compatriot Dan Evans, sustained a right knee injury on Tuesday. Evans said he was “heartbroken” afterwards and will have a scan to determine the lay-off required.

Andy Murray a major doubt for final Wimbledon after retiring at Queen’s

18:23 , Sonia Twigg

Murray waved to the 10,000-capacity crowd after the match, signaling his goodbye to a tournament he has won five times.

This latest setback puts his next few weeks on the grass into some doubt. Murray was set to play an exhibition event in Hurlingham next week before Wimbledon, potentially his final tournament before retirement, starts on 1 July.

The three-time Grand Slam champion stated before this tournament that he is set to end his 20-year professional career this summer, either after Wimbledon or the Paris Olympics, and is set to partner older brother Jamie in the doubles at SW19 - the first time the pair would have combined at a Grand Slam tournament.

That is a bitter blow to English hopes, the expectations will shift to Jack Draper, but the more worrying question will be over what it could mean for Murray’s chances at Wimbledon.

It is likely that the former world number one and Wimbledon winner could be in his last season, and there have been rumours flying around that he will retire after the Olympics, but there has been no official announcements yet.

Jordan Thompson speaks after Andy Murray defaulted

17:52 , Sonia Twigg

When asked whether it could be Murray’s final outing at Queen’s, Thompson said: “That's no way to go out, especially for a great champion. I hope that's not his last match [Queen's] but I'm sure it won't be. I'm sure we can hang around one more time.”

17:45 , Sonia Twigg

Thompson was asked about a previous meeting between him and Murray back in 2017, he said: “It could be my best tennis memory. I was a lot younger then, he was world No 1, I was a lucky loser, and I came and took him out in straight sets. Not many guys on the tour get to play world No 1, alone beat them. So it was definitely on my mind and I couldn't wait to get out there again. Honestly, I don't say that too often about a tennis match anymore. I'm really looking forward to it. But today I was really looking forward to that.”

The injury affecting Murray has now been confirmed to be a back injury.

When asked what he was trying to do, the Australian said: Hit the ball in and make him run. I actually learned that from him when he was playing and if a guy was hurt or cramping or something, he'd always use a drop shot or just try and take it up the line. I thought 'I just need to make him move'. I guess that's the benefit of me being a lot younger than him and watching him play. I learned a lot of things watching him play, so it's an honour to share the court with him, but it's just sad that it ended like that.

“In any other sport, if someone was hurt I don't think the opponent would let up at all. It's nothing personal, just trying to get the job done.”

Andy Murray a major doubt for final Wimbledon after retiring at Queen’s

17:35 , Sonia Twigg

Andy Murray retired from his second-round match at Queen’s Club on Wednesday, plunging his participation at his final Wimbledon Championships in doubt.

The 37-year-old was hobbling throughout the warm-up and it was clear from the start, when he could barely move from the baseline after serving, that the five-time champion was not in any condition to compete with Australian opponent Jordan Thompson.

After three games he took a medical timeout, with a physio working on metal right hip, and Murray valiantly continued to play on until the change-of-ends after the fifth game.

Just taking a look back at the footage and Murray looked uncomfortable even coming out of the locker room.

Although it is unlikely he was struggling with it during his warm up ahead of the match, and there were no signs of it in his gritty win yesterday.

Queen’s are bidding farewell to the tennis player who has won this tournament five times. It’s not how he would want to go out, but the injury seemed to be bothering him too much to continue.

Murray has the trainer back on and I think the discussion will be about whether he chooses to keep going in this match or not.

I think he has called it. The crowd will be disappointed, he will be disappointed his family are all there, but there was just no way he could keep going.

Murray has missed two shots, straight into the net on his serve and is in danger of being broken again.

He manages to pull it back to 15-30, but double-faults and gives Thompson two break points, which he only needs one of with a second double fault.

Murray is cheered by all sections of the crowd as he gets up and gets back on his feet, but the first shot he has to hit is very wayward and he looks uncomfortable.

Thompson is playing with this now, he plays a drop shot that Murray tries to get to but clearly doesn’t want to push too hard.

Thompson quickly establishes a 40-0 lead, Murray gets a point with a well-timed backhand return.

Thompson takes the game, Murray does come to the net and makes a shot but has to hop on the spot in pain when he gets there.

Murray still down and getting treatment on what looks like the small of his back. Hopefully it’s not something too serious with Wimbledon around the corner, but he might have to make a decision about what to do in this match.

Murray has got his trainer out on court to look at the leg that seems to be bothering him. It looks like it has just happened or surely he would have pulled out before this.

Murray serves an ace down the middle despite being barely able to jump to serve here, and has a chance to win his first game here.

His mum and brother are in attendance, and he does hold. The crowd clap and express their appreciation, but he hobbles to his seat at the changeover.

Andy Murray 0-2 Jordan Thompson

Thompson follows up his break with a quick 30-0 lead on his own serve, and Murray literally cannot get to these serves at all and is limping between points.

Murray wins a point on a hobble, if the ball is in front of him he can hit it nicely but he is not getting to most of them and just has to watch the ball past him.

Thompson holds to 15.

Andy Murray 0-1 Jordan Thompson

Murray is serving, but not very quickly or fluently although he pulls back a point to 15-15.

He can’t get in the right position to play a sliced return from Thompson and doesn’t look like he can move around the court very well at all.

Thompson has two break points in the first game, Murray’s serves have been tame, and Thompson wins the first game to 15 on Murray’s serve.

British number one Jack Draper finds early rewards from new aggressive style

14:22 , Sonia Twigg

Jack Draper’s aggressive new mindset has already landed him a first ATP title and seen him crowned British number one, but he has his sights set even higher.

The 22-year-old has transformed himself from baseline grinder to “six foot four big server” under the guidance of new coach Wayne Ferreira.

Draper has come a long way in a short space of time, having cut a forlorn figure as he crashed out in the first round at the French Open only three weeks ago.

Carlos Alcaraz began the defence of his cinch Championship crown with a straight-sets win over Francisco Cerundolo.

The reigning king of Queen’s, and Wimbledon champion, stretched his winning streak on grass to 13 matches with a 6-1 7-5 victory.

World number 26 Cerundolo was last seen pushing Novak Djokovic to five sets, and subsequently into a hospital bed, at the French Open.

The Argentinian proved a minor irritant to Alcaraz, too, by breaking the world number two early in the second set.

Illness ends Katie Boulter’s bid in Birmingham

Katie Boulter’s winning run came to a premature end in Birmingham, with the British number one retiring through illness after the first set of her opening match against Anhelina Kalinina.

Boulter successfully retained her Rothesay Open title in Nottingham on Sunday but admitted after battling through two matches in one day because of bad weather that she was not feeling well.

She nevertheless headed to Edgbaston Priory but the 27-year-old struggled from the start against Ukrainian Kalinina and called the trainer and the doctor trailing 5-2.

Emma Raducanu and Naomi Osaka lead Wimbledon wild cards

Emma Raducanu is among a number of tennis players to be awarded Wimbledon wildcards for the upcoming 2024 championships.

The former US Open champion reached the semi-finals of the Nottingham Open last week, before being knocked out by fellow British player Katie Boulter in an encouraging start to her grass court season.

Raducanu has not played at Wimbledon for two years, and in 2021 she reached the fourth round. Her recent career has been plagued by wrist and ankle surgeries, and she recently declined a wildcard to represent Great Britain at the summer Olympics.

Dan Evans worried about missing Wimbledon and Olympics after knee injury

12:45 , Sonia Twigg

A tearful Dan Evans admitted he was “heartbroken” at the prospect of missing Wimbledon and the Olympics after suffering a knee injury at Queen’s Club.

Just two days after he was named in the Great Britain squad for Paris 2024, Evans took a nasty fall on the grass in his first-round match at the cinch Championships against American Brandon Nakashima.

The 34-year-old fears he has damaged medial collateral ligaments in his right knee.

He has had to pull out of playing doubles with Andy Murray at Queen’s this week and will instead undergo a scan in the coming days to determine the extent of the injury.

Andy Murray wins 1,000th career match to start final Queen’s Club bow in high spirits

12:30 , Sonia Twigg

Was it relief? Or was it simply pure joy? Whatever it was, Andy Murray’s reaction to a first tour victory since March was one of those trademark roars towards his box, a huge rush of adrenaline at a sensation he has not experienced much in 2024: winning.

Not one to keep an eye on his own facts and stats as his career draws to an anticipated close this summer, his mum Judy told him pre-match that this was his 1,000th match on tour and the five-time champion at Queen’s raised his level for the occasion and for the adoring British crowd. He beat Aussie qualifier Alexei Popyrin – ranked 81 places above him – in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, for a valuable first-round win.

A first victory at tour level since the hard courts of Miami in late March, when he injured his ankle, and a first victory since switching racket from Head to Yonex. Even in the twilight of his time in the professional arena, he is keen to discover any means of gaining an edge.
