Radgie Rollers win two gold medals at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu championships

CARLISLE's Radgie Rollers have won two gold medals at a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu championships.

The Carlisle group which specialises in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) was represented by a small team at the BJJ British Open that took place on Saturday, May 18, and Sunday, May 18 at the Belle Vue Leisure Centre in Manchester.

BJJ is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. Originating from Brazil, BJJ emphasizes leverage and technique, allowing smaller individuals to defend themselves against larger opponents through the use of joint locks, chokes, and positional control.

At the event, 36-year-old Simon Kerr, a physiotherapist, and 15-year-old William Howard School student Corin Rees claimed gold in the middleweight purple belt category and teen two white belt category respectively.

Kit Wilson is a BJJ fighter and a coach at the Carlisle-based Radgie Rollers and explained more about the team's efforts at the event.

He said: "At the competition, the team engaged in competitive matches. From executing takedowns to finishing submissions.

"BJJ is not only a physically demanding sport but also benefits via problem-solving, building confidence and self-esteem, discipline, focus, respect, and friendship.

"Radgie Rollers is emerging as one of the best teams in the UK. They have a beginners course starting in June."
