Southampton will be boosted by the return of manager Ralph Hasenhuttl to the dugout for Monday night’s visit of Liverpool in the Premier League.

The Austrian coach, 53, took charge of the Saints remotely for a second consecutive goalless draw against West Ham on Tuesday evening after a member of his household tested positive for Covid-19.

However, Southampton confirmed on New Year’s Eve that Hasenhuttl - who immediately began self-isolating - had been cleared to return to duties at the club’s Staplewood Campus training ground from Friday.

In a statement released via their official website, Southampton explained that Hasenhuttl’s wife had returned a positive coronavirus test without experiencing any symptoms on December 28, with that result examined and flagged as a potential false positive.

The Saints said that everyone in Hasenhuttl’s household had since returned negative results during two rounds of further testing undergone on December 29 and December 31.

“Under the guidance of both the Southampton medical team and the Premier League medical advisor, we are now confident that the original test was a false positive and Ralph has now been cleared to return to Staplewood and take training from January 1st,” Southampton’s statement read.

“The club would like to make clear that we fully support the protocols and regulations that led to Ralph self-isolating and view them as vital in keeping everyone involved in our club, our community and our game in a safe environment.”

Southampton have dropped to ninth after a four-game winless run in the Premier League that included draws with Arsenal, Fulham and West Ham and a defeat to Manchester City, three points off the top four and seven adrift of the title pace.
