Thaddeus Young shares wife's reaction to hater: 'I hope you're ready to meet your maker'

Thaddeus Young's wife clearly has no qualms clapping back at social-media haters.

Young and his Toronto Raptors teammate Chris Boucher opened up about their worst fan experiences on the latest episode of Hustle Play, and talked about how sports betting has exacerbated their vitriol.

The advent of social media has made it easier than ever for people to heckle athletes, be it due to lacklustre performances or simply because they dislike them.

The veteran forward gave a personal anecdote, reflecting on the time a fan tweeted that they were going to kill his family because he cost him a parlay on their bet. His wife Shekinah Young responded in kind.

“I hope you're ready to meet your maker,” she wrote back at the time.

Thaddeus Young, 33, lamented that the NBA has always been this way, but the introduction of sports betting has added another layer to it.

“I mean, it's always been happening and I think that it's accelerated because, like, we have cameras and phones and stuff,” Young said on Hustle Play. “Social media is obviously outputting it a little bit more, but you know, these things have always been happening. And for me personally, I try not to let it bother me, but when you start to say crazy stuff like that... My wife ... has just seen a tweet not long ago. Somebody — I guess they didn't parlay on their bets or whatever — but they were going to kill my family.

"And that's crazy. So she sends a tweet back (saying), 'I hope you're ready to meet your maker.'”

Boucher added that fans need to remember that athletes have money on the line, as well. He used the example of a person betting on a team to win by 10 points and that players coming in to play garbage minutes might have a negative impact on their bet. However, these players are using this time to hone their skills and earn their paycheck, not to suffice the gambling community.

“If (a bench player) is trying to score and they mess up your parlay, he's trying to get his too,” said Boucher. “I just don't get how you're not seeing that that way and you're thinking about your bet. That's why I always say there is no such thing as garbage minutes, because it's opportunity for those guys who are on the bench, right?”

Young and Boucher not only enlightened us to the fact that Mrs. Young is someone you don’t want to mess with, but that athletes are inundated with a robust form of criticism because of sports betting — one that goes beyond mere gratuitous comments, and actually concerns the safety of the athletes and their loved ones.
