Real Madrid vs Barcelona LIVE!

A tenacious Barcelona frustrated Real Madrid to secure a 1-0 win over their bitter rivals in an ill-tempered Copa del Rey semi-final first leg on Thursday. The visitors defended superbly after Real centre-back Eder Militao scored an own goal in the first half.

Barcelona's winner arrived in the 26th minute when Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga gifted a back pass to Ferran Torres who reacted quickly to slide the ball to Franck Kessie. His point-blank strike was saved but bounced off Militao and into the net.

The assistant referee signalled offside but the VAR replay showed Kessie was fractionally onside and the goal stood. The teams meet again in Barcelona on April 5 with the winners to face Athletic Club or Osasuna in the final.

Tonight’s defeat was Real Madrid’s first at the Bernabeu in 11 months!

Gutting for Real Madrid

22:09 , Marc Mayo

Not a single shot on target in that match despite dominating the ball with 65 per cent of possession.

They did manage 11 shots and even restricted Barcelona to a mere four, yet it was the visitors with the two best chances of the game.

First blood to Barcelona

A fine defensive display from Xavi’s side, who just about survived without the injured Robert Lewandowski.

FULL TIME! Real Madrid 0-1 Barcelona

21:55 , Marc Mayo

The Blaugrana take the first-leg advantage with a narrow win at the Bernabeu!

21:55 , Marc Mayo

90+6 mins: We’re well into added-on time in added-on time as Real win a corner. Barcelona are furious!

21:52 , Marc Mayo

90+4 mins: Ter Stegen takes a whack to the face as he beats Alvaro to a high cross, winning a foul in the process.

21:51 , Marc Mayo

90+3 mins: All a bit scrappy as the final whistle approaches... do Real have one last push in them?

21:49 , Marc Mayo

90+1 mins: Inevitably, another yellow card is dished out with Barcelona coach Xavi the latest recipient.

21:48 , Marc Mayo

90 mins: Rodrygo takes aim from 25 yards and clips his shot just wide of the far post!

Five minutes added on...

21:48 , Marc Mayo

89 mins: A bit more zip to Madrid’s play causes a moment of panic in the Barcelona box but the visitors see it through.

21:46 , Marc Mayo

87 mins: Another ball flung in towards Benzema that even he can’t control as Ter Stegen mops up for the umpteenth time tonight.

No saves for the Catalans’ keeper but he’s still shone.

21:44 , Marc Mayo

85 mins: Good move from Barcelona ends with Fati winning a corner, before which Sergi Roberto will replace Kessie.

The visitors initially put Torres’ number up but it will be the Ivorian midfielder coming off in a like-for-like swap.

21:42 , Marc Mayo

84 mins: Young striker Alvaro, who netted the late leveller against Atleti last time out, comes on for Modric.

21:41 , Marc Mayo

83 mins: They’ve had all the territory and plenty of effort but Madrid have sorely lacked a cutting edge tonight.

Fortunately for them, they’re still in this game and certainly in the tie.

21:38 , Marc Mayo

80 mins: Into the final knockings of this semi-final first leg at the Bernabeu. Or, as it’s also known, Real Madrid time.

On the weekend, it was the 85th minute when they snatched a draw with rivals Atletico...

21:36 , Marc Mayo

78 mins: Valverde acrobatically keeps Tchouameni’s cross in play and a bit of a scramble leads to big Real appeals for handball.

Nothing in it, again. Some flimsy protests from the home end tonight.

21:34 , Marc Mayo

76 mins: Camavinga has gone to left-back for Madrid since Nacho departed and he’s caught offside after lazily wandering too far upfield, terminating their last attack.

21:31 , Marc Mayo

73 mins: Valverde booked for a late lunge on De Jong.

We’ll have another change with Kroos, who’s had a quiet one, off for Tchouameni.

Barcelona chance!

21:30 , Marc Mayo

72 mins: WHAT A CHANCE!

Kessie appears unmarked at the penalty spot to make it 2-0 and his shot is deflected wide... by Fati! Oh my.

21:29 , Marc Mayo

70 mins: Camavinga unhappy after conceding a foul for sending Araujo to the ground. Barcelona whip it in and Gavi heads harmlessly wide.

Only Barcelona’s second shot of the game.

Barcelona chance!

21:27 , Marc Mayo

68 mins: Raphinha breaks down the left and sizzles a cross in low and it’s too hot for Torres!

Xavi turns to his bench now, introducing Fati for Raphinha.

21:25 , Marc Mayo

66 mins: A yellow card for Kessie leaving a hand on the face of Carvajal. A soft one, in all honesty.

This game needs fresh legs to liven it up with Nacho takes off for Rodrygo in an attacking change by Ancelotti.

21:22 , Marc Mayo

63 mins: Patient stuff from Los Blancos as Benzema comes deep to try and spark a leveller.

It comes to Carvajal, whose tame cross is easily plucked by Ter Stegen.

21:19 , Marc Mayo

61 mins: Chance for Barcelona to counter as Torres picks Raphinha out over the top!

Camavinga chases back well and snatches the ball in the box.

21:18 , Marc Mayo

60 mins: Very ambitious penalty appeal from the home fans as Modric rockets a volley into Alonso’s ribs from close range. Nothing from the referee.

21:17 , Marc Mayo

59 mins: Tricky run from Valverde and he looks for Benzema bursting through on goal, but Alonso gets a fine nick on it and the ball runs through to Ter Stegen.

21:15 , Marc Mayo

56 mins: Torres crowded out as Barcelona look to pass their way out of Real’s pressure.

Can the hosts test Ter Stegen for the first time tonight?

21:13 , Marc Mayo

54 mins: Raphinha wins a foul off Nacho in a bid to counter on Real, earning the defender a yellow card.

Worth remembering that Barcelona have still only had one shot, and it was the only one for either side that hit the target... and wasn’t even the one that went in for the goal!

(Getty Images)

21:09 , Marc Mayo

51 mins: Yellow card for Gavi as it boils over in the Barcelona box ahead of another Madrid corner.

Not much in that but the young Spaniard had been lucky to avoid a booking in the first half. The referee may have remembered that.

Real Madrid chance!

21:07 , Marc Mayo

49 mins: Valverde lays a superb cross into the box, just behind Benzema but it meets Vinicius Jr... Araujo turns his shot over the bar!

21:06 , Marc Mayo

47 mins: And there’s another! Camavinga slips Vinicius Jr down the right channel and the winger looks to have kept it in play before Ter Stegen turns his cross behind.

Goal kick given.

21:05 , Marc Mayo

46 mins: Straight back into the action with Modric unhappy at Alonso avoiding conceding a corner and, in fact, winning a goal kick after he just keeps the ball in play.

Worth remembering some Real fans held a pre-game protest against alleged refereeing corruption outside the stadium.

Kick-off! Real Madrid 0-1 Barcelona

21:03 , Marc Mayo

No changes at the break and we get back underway in El Clasico!

First-half highlights

21:02 , Marc Mayo

This was actually a fantastic run by De Jong before a bit of rough and tumble with Vinicius Jr. The Madrid man can, and did, feel hard done by to be booked for this.

Room for Barcelona to improve

20:59 , Marc Mayo

It was a slow start from the visitors, who have struggled to get their front three working together despite the goal.

Ferran Torres is not a proper central striker but Barcelona lack the fluidity to get him rotating with Gavi and Raphinha, nor the runners in behind for him to drop deep as a false nine.

First-half highlights

20:56 , Marc Mayo

Officially this has gone down as an Eder Militao own goal.

Frustrating half for Madrid

20:51 , Marc Mayo

Luka Modric’s early chance and Karim Benzema’s disallowed goal underlined a bright start from the hosts.

Since around the 20-minute mark, however, it has been frustration after frustration with the referee a particular source of ire.

Conceding against the run of play has failed to spark them into live, too.

Half time! Real Madrid 0-1 Barcelona

20:48 , Marc Mayo

45+2 mins: Carvajal gets away with tripping Torres on the edge of the box with the flag up.

And that’s half-time! A few protests reserved for the referee as the hosts trudge off.

20:45 , Marc Mayo

45 mins: Raphinha booked for chopping Vinicius Jr, his fellow countryman eventually falling after multiple attempts on his person.

Two minutes added on.

20:43 , Marc Mayo

43 mins: Strong work from Militao to dart forward down the right and stick a ball into the box, turned behind for a corner which Madrid take short.

Ter Stegen is then equal to crosses from Nacho and Valverde.

Real Madrid chance!

20:42 , Marc Mayo

41 mins: Kroos with a trademark delivery from deep which picks out Carvajal’s run perfectly... he side-foots his shot over the bar!

Perhaps a case of the right place, wrong player.

Not long left for Madrid to level up in the first half...

20:41 , Marc Mayo

40 mins: Benzema crowded out in the box as he looks to flick a backheel to a teammate.

Barcelona clear and, once again, Gavi dodges a booking for bundling into Militao well after the ball had gone. Cue jeers...

20:39 , Marc Mayo

38 mins: Superb counter this time from Barcelona, De Jong beating Camavinga and moving it wide to Gavi.

The cross is perhaps overhit but not a bad one at all as Raphinha arrives a moment too late.

20:36 , Marc Mayo

36 mins: Busquets in classic Busquets form, on his record-breaking Clasico appearance no less, as he yanks back Camavinga’s arm then goes down clutching his face having given away the foul.

20:34 , Marc Mayo

33 mins: Fluid football from Los Blancos, Nacho bursting down the left before Benzema intertwines with Valverde and Carvajal’s ball in is cleared.

Kounde whacked his clearance against Kessie and the midfielder stays down hurt as Modric shoots over.

20:31 , Marc Mayo

31 mins: Ter Stegen does well to pick Vinicius Jr’s low cross into the six-yard box before launching a counter-attack with a quick kick... and it goes straight for a throw-in.

20:30 , Marc Mayo

29 mins: Modric, playing really advanced today, pops up in attack as Real look for a quick reply.

Their fury is aimed at the referee as Gavi clatters into Camavinga but escapes a yellow card. It’s all getting a bit Clasico...

20:28 , Marc Mayo

27 mins: That was, in fact, an own goal! Militao and Nacho both touched it home after Courtois’ save from Kessie.

GGGOOOOAAALLLL!!!!! Real Madrid 0-1 Barcelona

20:26 , Marc Mayo

26 mins: Now Barcelona have a goal ruled out!

Camavinga gives it away and Kessie is slipped in to bundle home - but the flag is up...

Was he, though?! VAR will have to check. Raphinha certainly was but he didn’t interfere and it’s tight for Kessie...

20:25 , Marc Mayo

24 mins: Absolutely superb play from De Jong as he rides Modric and Kroos’ tackles before getting in a right old grapple with Vinicius Jr.

Madrid are FURIOUS when the foul goes against Vinicius... it was six of one, half a dozen of the other but De Jong has to be praised for that run.

The Brazilian is booked.

20:23 , Marc Mayo

22 mins: Just a hint of frustration creeping around the Bernabeu now as a couple of decisions go against them - not like they have much to complain about.

A few whistles ringing around as Barcelona start to keep the ball better.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

20:22 , Marc Mayo

21 mins: Good free-kick into the Madrid box from Alonso and Kounde rises well... Real deal with it, though. Militao throwing himself at the ball.

20:19 , Marc Mayo

19 mins: Torres picked out with a good ball into Barcelona’s frontline yet it’s all too slow and hesitant, with the front three spread too far apart.

Camavinga throws a clinical slide tackle in and the move breaks down.

20:17 , Marc Mayo

17 mins: A succession of corners for Real, Modric hitting the near-post with his first but winning another as Kessie and Rudiger tumble over each other.

The second is deeper and Ter Stegen punches nicely.

20:15 , Marc Mayo

15 mins: Pretty much all Real Madrid in the opening quarter-hour, Benzema taking aim from range to win a corner via a deflection.

A big Lewandowski-shaped hole up front for Barcelona.

20:13 , Marc Mayo

12 mins: Modric slides in on Kessie and sparks a move through Valverde and Vinicius Jr.

The ball goes in from the winger and Benzema is offside as he controls and finishes immaculately. A bit of a shame such a nice goal is ruled out!

20:09 , Marc Mayo

9 mins: Nacho knocks Raphinha’s run out for the first corner of the game.

The Brazilian goes short before a precision pass is picked by Modric but Los Blancos fail to generate the counter, a sloppy ball by Modric.

20:08 , Marc Mayo

7 mins: Vinicius Jr at the heart of things again for Real, beating De Jong with a stepover before slashing a cross out for a goal kick.

20:06 , Marc Mayo

5 mins: No natural right winger for Madrid tonight but Modric and Valverde are making good in-roads down that side for the hosts.

Vinicius Jr pops up on the left and is sent crashing to the turf by Araujo. A proper battle set to brew between those two.

It was one hell of a pre-game tifo from the home fans:

20:03 , Marc Mayo

3 mins: Barcelona attempt to steady themselves after that iffy start but Valverde chases their possession into touch.

Good early press from Real.

Real Madrid chance!

20:02 , Marc Mayo

1 min: Modric the surprise player bursting through onto a ball in behind and he slams his shot into the side netting!

The flag goes up but replays suggest VAR would have overturned it...

Kick-off! Real Madrid 0-0 Barcelona

The fury was sparked by the ‘Caso Neigreira’ in which Barcelona are accused of paying former vice-president of the Referees Committee Enriquez Negreira’s company, Dansil 95, over £5m during a period between 2001 and 2018.

An investigation is underway with Joan Laporta hitting back at the claims.

Carlo Ancelotti pleased to rely on Vinicius Jr

19:12 , Marc Mayo

Vinicius Jr starts for Real Madrid tonight and coach Carlo Ancelotti said ahead of the game that he has no problem with relying on the Brazilian winger to spark his side’s attack.

“Real Madrid have a dependency on Vinicius Jr and that is a good dependency to have because he is one of the best players in the world right now,” he told reporters.

“I see depending on Vinicius as a normal thing for us, he is one of the biggest in the world today.

“I don't need to give him any extra advice. We won't change who we are. He will be facing a tough challenge against Ronald Araujo and I think it's going to be a fun one. I hope he wins.”

Real Madrid the favourites in Xavi’s eyes

18:57 , Marc Mayo

A seven-point lead in LaLiga, plus victory in their last tie for the Supercopa trophy, means little for the Barcelona coach.

He still sees Real Madrid as the favourites to reach the Copa del Rey final, saying before the game: “It's a strong Madrid, a Madrid that have won trophies recently, we are a team in the process of construction.

“Madrid are competing in Europe, they thrashed Liverpool at their ground. They are favourites, to be honest.

“We have the personality and players to hurt them too, we've shown it - for me it’s quite an even tie.”

Evening Standard score prediction

17:55 , Marc Mayo

This could prove to be a good time to play Barcelona for Real, with Xavi’s side suffering European disappointment and then falling to just their second LaLiga defeat of the season over the weekend.

There are signs too that Real might be starting to hit their stride, and they look capable of making the most of home advantage and taking a narrow lead into the second leg.

Real Madrid to win, 2-1.

Predicted Barcelona XI: Ter Stegen; Kounde, Araujo, Christensen, Alonso; Kessie, Busquets, De Jong; Raphinha, Fati, Gavi.

Early Barcelona team news

17:44 , Marc Mayo

Barcelona confirmed on Monday that Robert Lewandowski has suffered a hamstring injury, ruling him out of the Clasico in a huge blow to his side.

Pedri and Ousmane Dembele both remain out with thigh problems.

Lewandowski’s absence could mean Ansu Fati starts through the middle, with Gavi and Raphinha either side of him, if he can shake off a knee problem.

17:40 , Marc Mayo

Predicted Real Madrid XI: Courtois; Carvajal, Militao, Rudiger, Nacho; Valverde, Tchouameni, Modric; Asensio, Benzema, Vinicius Jr.

Early Real Madrid team news

17:34 , Marc Mayo

David Alaba is expected to be out for up to a month after picking up a hamstring injury in the win over Liverpool, meaning Nacho is set to continue at left-back with Ferland Mendy also unavailable.

Rodrygo is back in training as question marks remain over his fitness.

Luka Modric’s yellow card against Atletico at the weekend means he will be suspended for Real’s next LaLiga match, but that does not apply for this Copa del Rey clash.
