Would we really want Rodgers back at Swansea?

Firstly, let’s clarify - at the time of writing, Garry Monk was still manager of Swansea City.

However there is increasing doubt that he is likely to hold the position for much longer. So we can at least speculate on who would come in, should Monk go.

And the media and fans have been doing that for a good week now.

One of the names that has popped up time and again, alongside the likes of Mark Warburton and David Moyes, is former Swans manager Brendan Rodgers.

During his time with the club, Rodgers was a hero.

In one blistering season he took Swansea to another level in style of play, before taking them up an actual level of the football pyramid - into the Premier League via the now legendary 2011 Championship play-off final.

In his second season in charge he guided the Swans to League safety and an impressive mid-table finish, taking huge scalps along the way - Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal to name a few.

But then in May 2012, the charismatic Irishman broke fans’ hearts when he left for Liverpool, taking with him an assortment of backroom staff as well as influential midfielder Joe Allen.

He came across as slimy and dishonest, while his cliche-riddled open letter published in the local paper just rubbed salt into the wounds. The situation was all too similar to Roberto Martinez’s departure.

Rodgers was the new Judas.

But since he left we have had two new managers, both with their own flaws.

Time has healed those salty wounds somewhat, and - looking at this from a footballing perspective - there’s little doubt that he would instill some much-needed confidence in his players and rekindle the passing philosophy that Swans fans cherish and that has been missing in the last few months.

In footballing terms, he may be one of the best men for the job.

But he’s definitely lost some credibility in this blogger’s eyes. I’d prefer to see a fresh face; someone who can offer something new to the club. Someone who won’t instantly up and leave when another club comes knocking. Someone who won’t use Swansea as another stepping stone.

Either way, the fans will surely get behind whoever is put in place to take their beloved team forward. Let’s just hope it’s someone we can trust.
