England select seven uncapped players in ODI training squad while Reece Topley and David Willey return

England have selected seven uncapped players, including Lancashire quick bowler Richard Gleeson and Warwickshire batsman Sam Hain, in the 24-man training group for the three-game one-day international series against Ireland which begins on July 30.

Selection was complicated by quarantine rules caused by Covid-19 and the congested summer schedule, with only one day between the end of the Test series against the West Indies and the first ODI.

Of the players in the extended red-ball group - the 13 members of the Test squad and the nine reserves - only Saqib Mahmood is selected. Mahmood is expected to move into the limited-overs bubble, who will meet at the Ageas Bowl next Thursday.

The squad for the series will be coached by Paul Collingwood, the England assistant coach. Quarantine rules mean that England have had to enlist a new coaching staff, and Marcus Trescothick and James Foster are among the specialist coaches who will work with the team.

Left-arm quick David Willey earns his first recall since being dropped for Jofra Archer before the World Cup last year. Reece Topley is also picked for the first time in four years, an indication that England are keen to have a left-arm option in their attack.

Pat Brown, Chris Jordan and Dawid Malan were all ruled out of the squad with injury.

As expected after his earlier omission from the 55-man training group, Alex Hales was excluded. Despite being one of the most coveted Englishmen in Twenty20 leagues around the world, and a fine ODI average of 37.80, Hales has not been selected for England since failing a drug test on the brink of last year’s World Cup. “The huge breakdown in trust between him and the players was extremely dramatic,” England captain Eoin Morgan said in May.

“I have nothing to add to what Eoin Morgan said about Alex,” said national selector Ed Smith. “We know how good a player he is. We know where he stands.

“That's the situation. We know what happened. Eoin's been very clear about his comments. We support that.”

The players will prepare by playing two intra-group warm-up matches, while the England Lions - the national second team - will also play a game against Ireland to help their preparation.
