A 2-1 win for Chelsea tonight secured the Blues a place in the Champions League knockout stages.
Frank Lampard's side coasted to a 3-0 victory over the same opponents in their previous European outing at Stamford Bridge, and a win in France has sealed a last-16 spot with two games to spare.
With fixtures piling up in a unique season, Lampard was keen to secure qualification as early as possible to start rotating his squad ahead of a busy festive schedule.
Chelsea entered the match in fine form to spark talk of a potential title challenge, but the Blues were made to work hard for the result.
Callum Hudson-Odoi gave Chelsea a 1-0 lead at half-time. Serhou Guirassy equalised for Rennes late on, but Olivier Giroud headed Chelsea back in front in injury time.
