The Repair Shop's Jay Blades was part of a team awarded a gold medal at Chelsea Flower Show for a community garden that he worked on with designer James Smith.

The garden was inspired by the volunteers on the Doddington Estate in Battersea, who had created a half-acre community garden using donated trees, shrubs, perennials and edibles – described as "a green oasis tucked between the tower blocks" by Chelsea Flower Show.

Kew Gardens and nearby Battersea Park made the donations.

The space includes eight individually styled upcycled chairs by Jay's furniture restorers Jay & Co, which were made at his workshop in Ironbridge, Shropshire. The vibrant chairs encompass a range of different designs, and feature next to a big communal table inset with chess and draughts boards.

TV presenter Jay shared the news on Instagram, posting an image of himself in the garden with designer James.

"We are very proud to have taken part in this project that has won one of the gold medals today at Chelsea Flower Show," Jay wrote.

He added: "Taking inspiration from the Doddington Estate in Battersea, James Smith designed London Square Community Garden which symbolises the power of gardens and how they bring people together."

The aim of the garden is to showcase the power of community, and how a green space can bring people together to meet, relax, share food and connect with nature. It also features a meeting space under a pergola with an outdoor kitchen and a large swing seat near a garden bookcase.

The Chelsea Flower Show adds that "scented plants include climbing Trachelospermum jasminoides, rosemary, thyme and salvias, and Erigeron karvinskianus and Mahonia eurybracteata subsp. ganpinensis 'Soft Caress' have been chosen for their resilience".

Jay previously told the Chelsea Flower Show: "Green spaces are essential for everyone at every age. It’s brilliant to have the opportunity to collaborate with London Square on this garden. I encourage all of you to get outside whenever you can and experience the peace and joy that green spaces bring."

The London Square Community Garden, which won the Gold Medal in the category for Sanctuary Gardens, will be on display until Saturday, 27th May, after which it will be relocated to the Doddington & Rollo Community Roof Garden in Battersea.
