Report: NBA to honor David Stern with uniform additions for rest of season
The NBA lost a giant on Wednesday with the death of former commissioner David Stern, who helped expand the league into a global powerhouse during his tenure from 1984-2014.
Stern died at 77 after suffering a brain hemorrhage on Dec. 12.
Black bands on jerseys
On Thursday, Uni Watch’s Paul Lukas reported that the league will honor Stern’s memory with commemorative black bands on player jerseys for the rest of the season. Referees will also wear the bands.
Touch of irony
Lukas also noted the irony of the placement of the bands, which will sit alongside corporate sponsorship and manufacturer logos, an idea that Stern was reluctant to advance during his tenure.
“As a personal matter, I am not in favor of it,” Stern told NBC Sports Boston in 2012. “But I'm not standing in the way of it. If my board wants to do it, we'll do it.
“Of all the leagues in the world, the NBA is the only one that has its own logo on it. No information of the manufacturer and no sponsor, and that is something that I have worked hard to preserve for many decades. But I understand that the team may have to come to consider it.”
The NBA started allowing corporate sponsor logos on uniforms in 2017 under commissioner Adam Silver’s watch.
It is not clear when the black bands will make their first appearance.
