Review: the Halo Capsule vacuum cleaner is perfect for small London homes
Living in London means that space is often squeezed - and when push comes to shove, room for cleaning products is often sacrificed for more in the living room, bedroom or kitchen.
Utility cupboards are small, black holes of places crammed in a corner or under the stairs, which means the things going in them must also be small; slotted in Tetris-style with the door slammed shut quickly to stop everything tumbling out - until the next unfortunate soul prises it open. It’s a sport many Londoners have honed, myself included.
My own utility cupboard is behind an unassuming door right by the front entrance, and many, including my current flatmates, have no idea it’s there until I point it out. Inside we store our ironing board, scores of mystifying chargers and cables second to only the piles of canvas tote bags, and until recently, a knackered vacuum cleaner that greedily hogged all the floor space and a good portion of the upper cupboard too, thanks to its anaconda-esque plastic cord.
The vacuum, the brand name long faded over time, had been soldiering on valiantly over the years, picking up less and less floor detritus despite frequent emptying. Then came the day I was simply rolling it over dirty carpets, watching in fruitless hope as it failed to pick up anything at all. It was time for it to go to the great storage cupboard in the sky and bring in a younger, smarter niftier replacement.
Enter the Halo Capsule; slimmer, younger, sexier - as far as vacuums go, anyway. A dazzling new cordless contender to the market, its design instantly turned my head - no wires to trip over and an unbelievably light weight of 2.6kg. It’s super slim, going for three hours on a full charge (60min), powered by long-lasting Lithium batteries.
On delivery, I was surprised to see how small the box was, which instantly raised doubts over the Halo’s effectiveness. But as I should well know by now, size isn’t everything. After a quick examination of all the parts (it comes with four accessories and a free wall dock) I gave it a quick run over my bedroom rug before taking it for a spin on the hardwood floors underneath. While the lowest setting removed some of the dirt and debris, putting it on turbo really gave it some welly and saw it cut through the dirt visibly, just as advertised.
Everything collects into a dust pouch, held in the body of the main chamber. Made of paper, each of these can hold 1.6L, which is more than enough to clean my entire flat a few times over.
It’s easy to hold using the handle at the top and is made from premium Carbon Fibre, typically found in aviation and motorsport, a world first in domestic appliances. This is what makes it ultra-light - twice as light as its fellow upright peers, in fact. While I had no trouble handling it with one hand, you can give it further support by placing another underneath.
There are Eco, Performance and Boost settings to help you get the right level of suction, and you can clip nozzle attachments directly to the body of the Halo to help clean awkward spots, like cars, stairs and corners, leaving your house spotlessly clean.
I’ve used it a few times now with no bother and no need to change the pouch yet. It comes with a two-year guarantee too, for further peace of mind.
Vacuum cleaners may not be among the most exciting purchases, but if you’ve been looking for something powerful that doesn’t take up much room at all, the Halo Capsule cleans up on all fronts.
