Rio 2016 Saturday 20th preview: Farah leads Team GB into battle as Adams, Daley, Sharp and women’s triathlon trio eye gold

The 2016 Olympic Games is nearly over with the world’s best athletes battling it out for medals. Here are the most fascinating events happening on Saturday in Rio, Brazil.

ONES TO WATCH:

Great Britain’s Nicola Adams swept into the women’s boxing fly 48-51kg final with an assured semi-final victory over China’s Ren Cancan and now faces dangerous French fighter Sarah Ourahmoune in the defence of her London 2012 title. 33-year-old Adams was the first ever female boxing Olympic gold medallist and could become the first British boxer to repeat since 1924, but 34-year-old Ourahmoune is certainly no pushover (SATURDAY 18.00 BST).

THE MAIN EVENT:

ATHLETICS - MEN’S 5000M FINAL (SUNDAY 01.30 BST)

Mo Farah can complete a famous Olympic double double, following his London 2012 heroics, if he can get over the exertions of his 10,000m win and draining 5,000m heat in Rio. He got involved in another tangle during qualifying with fellow Briton Andrew Butchart looking more impressive behind the top three qualifiers of Paul Kipkemoi Chelimo, Muktar Edris and Dejen Gebremeskel. Former world champion Bernard Lagat also runs, looking to add gold to his Olympic silver and bronze medals in the 1500m. A real treat for athletics fans.

THE RIVALRY:

TRIATHLON - WOMEN (SATURDAY 15.00 BST)

After the Brownlee brothers won gold and silver in the men’s triathlon, the British women are intent on getting on the podium as well in Rio. American Gwen Jorgensen, though, provides a formidable rival for Helen Jenkins, Non Stanford and Vicky Holland. 30-year-old Jorgensen is a two-time world champion in superb form, while Jenkins and Stanford also have world championship wins on their CVs. New Zealand’s Andrea Hewitt and Bermuda’s Flora Duffy should be fired up too to challenge Jorgensen down the stretch.

THE UNDERDOG:

DIVING - MEN’S 10M PLATFORM FINAL (SATURDAY 20.30 BST)

Tom Daley is not the favourite for the climactic diving event in Rio, despite his global high profile. The Briton must beat two Chinese divers on the day in Chen Aisen and Qui Bo to get his hands on a gold medal, after pairing with Daniel Goodfellow to grab bronze in the 10m synchronised final. Chen already has a gold from that event, while Bo is a three-time world champion. 22-year-old Daley won bronze four years ago with London 2012 champion American David Boudia also in the hunt.

THE REDEMPTION:

ATHLETICS - WOMEN’S 800M FINAL (SUNDAY 01.15 BST)

Whatever South African Caster Semenya achieves in her athletics career will sadly be questioned following her gender dispute. She cannot help how she was born and all she wants to do is run, so maybe a gold medal could become some form of redemption after her time out of the sport especially when finishing in second place four years ago. The 25-year-old, who missed last year’s world championship, qualified fastest for the final with a time of 1:58.15. Briton Lynsey Sharp had the second best time coming in for what promises to be a thrilling race, whichever way you look at Semenya’s fabled history.
