Rio 2016 Sunday 14th preview: Kenny covets fifth gold on the cycling track as Whitlock faces epic Smith pommel duel

The 2016 Olympic Games is well underway with the world’s best athletes battling it out for medals. Here are the most fascinating events happening on Sunday in Rio, Brazil.

ONES TO WATCH:

Jason Kenny already has four Olympic gold medals to his name thanks to his team sprint gold earlier in the week, but he is not finished. The 28-year-old wants to defend his individual sprint title from London, however faces Team GB colleague Callum Skinner who is fresh off a storming team ride and fearsome Australian Matthew Glaetzer in the tricky final rounds (SUNDAY 21.04 BST).

THE MAIN EVENT:

ATHLETICS - MEN’S 100M FINAL (MONDAY 02.25 BST)

Arguably the most anticipated event of this Olympic Games in Rio finally comes around with superstar Usain Bolt out to win a third successive title in the blue-riband race. The 29-year-old Jamaican is already guaranteed a place in sporting folklore whatever happens on the track, however he will look to finish his Olympic career on a high. Controversial American Justin Gatlin carries the best 2016 form into the final with the likes of Trayvon Bromell and Yohan Blake fighting it out for bronze.

THE RIVALRY:

GYMNASTICS - MEN’S POMMEL HORSE FINAL (SUNDAY 19.34 BST)

British gymnastics has come on leaps and bounds in the last decade with Louis Smith the catalyst, thanks to his groundbreaking performances on the pommel horse. He won bronze in Beijing and silver in London, therefore will be hoping for gold this time. Unfortunately, his Team GB colleague Max Whitlock is the reigning world champion and heads in as favourite with Ukraine’s Oleg Verniaiev keen to put his all-around gold disappointment behind him and Frenchman Cyril Tommasone also dangerous on his day.

THE UNDERDOG:

TENNIS - WOMEN’S DOUBLES FINAL (SUNDAY)

Timea Bacsinszky and Martina Hingis face Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina for the gold medal after both teams saw off Czech opponents in the semi-finals. Hingis is already a legend in the game for what she has achieved in singles and doubles throughout her Grand Slam winning career, however she does not yet have an Olympic medal to her name. After replacing Belinda Bencic, Bacsinszky has come in and played beautifully however the talented Russians head into the final as favourites.

THE REDEMPTION:

ATHLETICS - WOMEN’S TRIPLE JUMP FINAL (MONDAY 0.55 BST)

Two-time world champion Caterine Ibarguen from Colombia is favourite heading into the women’s triple jump at the Olympic Stadium. She will be eager to carry her recent form into this final after missing out on gold four years ago in London to Kazakhstan’s Olga Rypakova, who is expected to pull out at least one big jump in her defence. Venezuelan Yulimar Rojas and Greek sensation Paraskevi Papachristou are also tipped to shine.
