Rivet downs WC, 64-50

Feb. 6—The Washington Catholic Cardinals (1-16) dropped a 64-50 game to Vincennes Rivet (4-13) on Tuesday, however it was a big improvement over the 66-36 loss earlier in the season to the Pats.

"I think you can see the improvement and how we are more of a team now. The culture is changing and I think you are seeing kids are proud to wear the WC uniform again," said WC coach Billy Nolley.

WC was led by Justin Sipes and Isaac Halter with 16 and 15 points, while David Wagner had eight, Aiden Henry had six, and Abdu Asker had five. WC hit eight 3-pointers during the game.

"Justin and Isaac are our big dogs and I'd put them against any two in the area. We are now starting to develop an inside game to go with our outside game," Nolley added.

Sipes opened the game with a WC 3-ball, but Rivet picked up the next eight points, to make 8-3. Isaac Halter added a Cardinal free throw, but Rivet continued to find Cody Ladson and pushed it to 14-4 with just over 2:00 left in the quarter. Asker and Sipes cut it to 16-7. Wagner and Sipes added a pair of free throws for WC as they trailed 16-12, in spite of going to the free throw line for 12 shots during the first quarter

Rivet dropped a pair of treys to extend it to 21-12, but Sipes answered with a trey of his own. Patriot Brody Shots had three straight buckets to get the lead back to 10, but Henry and Halter got it back to just five. Sipes hit a trey at the buzzer, cutting Rivet's half time lead to just 29-25, with his 13th point of the half.

Sipes cut the margin to 28-34 after his third trey, but Rivet went on 12-3 run during the quarter, leading 41-28 lead. AHenry also added a triple as all three third-quarter baskets came from behind the arc, but WC still trailed 46-34.

Wagner and Asker continued to cut the lead to 39-50 early in the fourth. Both sides traded baskets. Halter cut it to 46-54 with 3:00 left play. Rivet was up 58-46, when Halter made a rare 4-point play and cut it to 50-58 with 1:11 left.
