Indian batsman Rohit Sharma on Saturday broked former Indian captain Rahul Dravid’s record of scoring most international hundreds in England by an Indian player.

The Indian opening batsman achieved the record on the third day of the ongoing fourth Test between India and England. It was Rohit’s first overseas Test hundred after scoring seven centuries on home soil.

Rohit Sharma goes past Rahul Dravid’s eight international centuries in England

The Mumbai batsman has accumulated nine hundreds in England (each in Test and T20Is, seven in ODIS) to surpass Dravid’s tally of eight. The interesting point is eight of the opener’s nine hundreds have come since the start of 2018.

Australian legendary batsman Sir Donald Bradman holds the record of most international hundreds by a visiting batsman.

Rohit scored 127 from 256 balls and was involved in a 153-run stand with Cheteshwar Pujara for the second wicket which helped India to grasp the advantage of leading by 171 runs with skipper Virat Kohli (22*) and Ravindra Jadeja (9*) are batting at the crease.

At stumps, India’s score read 270/3 — a lead of 171 runs with seven wickets in the bag in the second essay.

You can say it would have been my last opportunity if I wouldn’t have succeeded: Rohit Sharma

Rohit struggled in his early Test days when he batted in the middle-order, he averaged 39.62 batting between no.3-no.6, but has been a revelation as an opener. In just 27 innings he has amassed 1462 runs at an average of 58.48, laced by five centuries.

Rohit talked about the time when he was offered to open the innings and the Mumbai batsman knew that it was his last opportunity to prove his mettle.

“In the back of my mind, I knew this was my last chance as well trying another position in the batting order. When the offer came to me, I was very much aware of it as there were talks within the management about opening the innings at some stage. Mentally, I was ready to take up the challenge and see how I can do well up the order,” Rohit said in a virtual press conference after the end of the third day’s play.

“I know I batted in the middle order and things didn’t go as per the way I wanted it to and I knew this was my last opportunity to try out and you know management is thinking whatever I want to try,” he added.

Rohit has scored eight Test hundreds, 29 in ODIs and four in T20 Internationals.
