Thomas Tuchel has confirmed Romelu Lukaku is back in the Chelsea squad for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash with Tottenham.

Lukaku apologised for his controversial interview during talks with Thomas Tuchel on Monday and the striker is in line for a recall against Spurs.

After going public about his unhappiness at Stamford Bridge, Lukaku was left out entirely against Liverpool on Sunday.

But he has trained with the Chelsea squad on Monday and could have an immediate opportunity to make amends with unhappy fans when Chelsea face Tottenham at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.

Tuchel said on Tuesday: “We were happy we took the time that it needed to look calmly on it. He apologised and is back in the squad for today's training.

“For me, the most important thing was to understand he did not do this intentionally to create this kind of noise in front of a big game. And it was the very first time that we felt him this way, and these are very important points to understand.

“It is not that big as people want it to be. It is also not small but it is small enough to stay calm, to accept an apology and to move forward.

“He is very aware of what happened and what he created. He feels a responsibility to clean the mess up. Maybe we will have a bit of smell from it still. He can handle it.

“He cannot expected everybody to be super happy the next day but we have a lot of reasons to make him play for us and to convince him to fight hard. We are happy he is our player and we will protect him.”

Lukaku held a productive meeting with Tuchel in which he expressed his regret over his unauthorised interview with Sky Italia, in which he said he was “not happy” with his situation at the club and would one day like to return to Inter Milan.

Lukaku faced an awkward meeting with Tuchel but has no intention of quitting Stamford Bridge. The £97.5million club-record signing is keen to move on from the episode and there is no chance of him leaving Chelsea in January.

Tuchel says he has seen nothing to suggest Lukaku is not committed to Chelsea.

“He is very committed,” said Tuchel. “That is why it was so surprising for me.

“Before that interview I never had the slightest doubt that he is not committed, because his actions on the pitch and off the pitch all go in the same direction.

“He is an emotional guy and sometimes he carries his heart on his tongue. It created some noise, but there are zero doubts to his commitment.”
