Rory McIlroy's wife Erica Stoll gives birth to baby Poppy

Rory McIlroy's wife Erica Stoll has given birth to a baby girl, the couple's first child.

The Northern Irish golf star said that Ms Stoll and the baby, named Poppie Kennedy McIlroy, are "doing great" after the Florida birth.

The four-time major winner wrote on Twitter: "Poppy Kennedy McIlroy, born August 31st, 12:15pm. She is the absolute love of our lives. Mother and baby are doing great.

"Massive thank you to all the staff at Jupiter Medical Center and Dr Sasha Melendy for their amazing care."

Mr McIlroy, 31, had said he would be "out of here" if Ms Stoll went into labour during the BMW Championship last week or the upcoming Tour Championship.

It remains to be seen if the defending champion will compete at East Lake when play gets under way on Friday. He is no longer scheduled to give an interview on Thursday afternoon.

Mr Mcilroy and Ms Stoll have been together since 2015. They got married in 2017.
